A friend of mine wants to buy a 320GB external HDD. We have zeroed down to the following options

Transcend Storejet Mobile - Rs. 3300
WD Passport - Rs. 3450
Seagate Freeagent - Rs. 3450

*The above prices are taken from Primeabgb's website for reference.

Now AFAIK, Transcend has 2 Yrs, WD has 3 Yrs and Seagate has 5 Yrs warranty.

Which one should my friend go for ??
He will be buying from ebay as he has coupons.

i would suggest that go for the seagate drive. it has five years warranty and pretty decent pricing.
avoid transcend. it has a dealer based RMA process and that can be painful.

in case your friend is allergic to seagate, then wd is also a good option. just if it had 5 years warranty

^^ But he has a 10% and 15% coupon so if he uses one of them then he can get around 400 bucks off in that case and since he uses a Kotak Mahindra card he has some sort of implicit discount on card purchases. So that makes it a good deal right ???

This is taken from western digital website.
ENTERPRISE, DESKTOP, AND NOTEBOOK DRIVES IN INDIA HAVE A 5YEAR WARRANTY
Read it here

External can be notebook or desktop i assume.

I would say go with WD for sure.

I have 3 WD external HDDs. 2 X WD elements 160 GB and 1 X WD passport.

2 element HDDs are now 1.5 years old. No issue yet. Very good access time.

1 passport 3 months old may be(purchased from theITwares). that also having decent RO/RW speeds and access time.

Will give you HD tunes specs by 2moro morning if you want.

Transcend provides 3yrs warranty. I can vouch for the Storejet 25 series. Really strong build, passes US military drop-test ( it fell from 3-4ft quite a time but no damage :P ) and good looking. Can't say about A.S.S. as I didn't have to face any problem.
