It's been more than six months since we published our first Xbox 360 versus PlayStation 3 graphics comparison feature. Games on both systems looked great, but the Xbox 360 games had more polish. We found that the Xbox 360 edged out the PlayStation 3 with higher-resolution textures and better lighting. The result of the first comparison wasn't surprising--the Xbox 360 had been available for a year and developers were already cranking out second-generation games, while the PlayStation 3 had just arrived in retail with its first-generation games. We decided to check on a few games released in recent months to see if the PlayStation 3 has caught up to or overtaken the Xbox 360.

Saw this topic few days back its trure that the textures look more sharper on the PS3 for oblivion but the fact is except 1 game PS3 doesnt beat the X360 in anything. Its not that the PS3 is a bad console but its only harder for ppl to develop games since the framework is more complicated that the X360
i've seen a video of John Carmack quakecon 2006 where he stated that its not impossible for the PS3 to catch up to the X360 only if the PS3 gets more time (8-10 months more) than the X360 it will be equally the same as the X360.
Techically speaking PS3 needs more time than the X360 to get to its graphic quality increased.

PS3 is a lot different in its architecture, and that's why ports will look better on the X360 because its similar to a PC and devs have already got a very good hang of it.

The reason why Oblivion looks better on the PS3 is because the devs actually developed it the PS3's way, and that's also what Ubisoft is doing with Haze. They are developing the PS3 version separately and first, and then will handle a port for X360 and PC simultaneously later.

can u please provide me with the source

If you purely look at the specs, X360's GPU is obviously superior, the devs can make up on PS3 using the cell architecture advantage but that would require some very complex coding I hear, not to mention simple porting will have no effect etc..

Point being its simple making a game for an X360 then a PS3, will take less resources, less time etc. Not to mention that X360 outsells the PS3, more so if you discount the Japanese-Korean belt, so the only reason a game house would take out an exclusive title for PS3 is if it appeals to the Jap audience..

The problem with game developers is that they don't want to use a new programming API. Windows and XBOX 360 programming are very similar so it's easier for game developers to develop games for them.

Similar things happen on the PC front. Everybody uses DirectX and only a handful of developers support OpenGL. The newer version of OpenGL i.e. 2.1 and 3.0, which will offer DX10 features will be released soon. But again only a handful of developers will adopt it bcoz they don't want to use a new API even if it benefits them.

For e.g. if they design a game using DX10, only Vista owners will be able to buy the game but if they use OpenGL they can sell their game on different platforms like Linux, Mac etc. which in turn will translate into better revenues for them.

The main factors responsible in low adoption of OpenGL is the lax updation of OpenGL by its governing members. Only recently they realized that DirectX was racing beyond OpenGL and decided to updated the API that's nearly 15 years old.

They should have provided the new API at the time of release of DX10.

The support of DX10 and OpenGL 2.1 will take atlesat Q3/Q4 of 2008 since its going to be really problemtic for the developers to use the integrated code which give DX10 effects on the next gen consoles John Carmack said this at quakecon 2006 "We dont plan to work on the DX10 or OpenGL 2.1 right now since the hardware which is required to run the games is not present. We will work on certain game(could see that certain game trailer behind him cudnt make out which game or CG animation that was):( "

this was in November 2006 his last official words about quake war:enemy territory. back then these things were not hardware present .

Free Radical's futuristic FPS to debut on PS3 in 2007 - PC and Xbox 360 versions could follow in 2008.
It's been confirmed by Ubisoft that its upcoming first-person shooter from Free Radical, Haze, will lead on the PlayStation 3, although the publisher has refused to reveal whether or not an exclusive deal has been agreed.

"Haze is leading on PS3, but no exclusivity for any platform has been officially announced,"" a spokesperson told GameSpot.

they never said that they are developing the game for the PS3 but instead the topic is Free Radical Debut their first FPS game for PS3 this is the same case if u chk out DMC4,Metal Gear Solid 4,Assassins Creed

these games were made on the PS3 first and then due their right which were made available to microsoft were made this game for the X360 and PC but by the looks of DMC4 and Assassins Creed both these games look sharper and lighting seems to be way better than the PS3

DMC4 and Assassin's creed are coming for x360,not MGS4.

Free Radicals have themselves expressed how amazing the PS3 is and the fact that they are going to love developing Haze on it. Ubisoft has no rights to serve to Sony, if it wanted to it could've released the game on all 3 systems at once, why the hold? Its quite obvious, PS3 is different in development than X360/Windows and it needs its own time, and it may end up looking better if it does. Even Kojima said the same thing when it was asked in an interview about MGS4 on X360 to which he replied he can only focus on PS3 now if he wants to bring out the best in MGS4, also like I said before Oblivion is a living example. PS3 Oblivion looks better than X360 Oblivion because Bethesda Studios didn't just simply port it, they worked up the entire game for the PS3 from the base.

As for Assasin's Creed, i'm almost certain it'll look a little better on the box, unless they're devoting two separate teams simultaneously for X360 and PS3.

The reason why Oblivion is better on the PS3 is because of the extra year of development time. Also, I thought Haze was exclusive to the PS3.

by the looks of things HAZE might turn out to be a STALKER pt.2 cuz it created a huge hype back in 2005 and now if u look at it there are still manything that makes the game look bad e.g foilage, animation, textures almost all look bland they lack realism even though stalker took a hell of a lot time i expectd it to be a kickass game but it turnd out to be very disappointing.

i feel the same about HAZE they hype that its geting that its a PS3 exclusive is ok but the cutscenes that u look at and the game that u play is always different u know many games have a pre-rendered videos as far as i know i've not seen a single HAZE ingame shot or anything all i see is pre-rendered cutscenes.Motostorm for example had a damn good looking video when it was released at the last E3 i was impressed with it but lateron down the road i saw the game a complete disappointment.Same goes for Killzone 2 again a pre-rendered cut scene just showing a hand shooting doesnt make the game realistic or good. Also both of them claimd that the quality that u see in the video will be exactly the same when the game released. The ppl who are developing the games for PS3 are just in a hurry to meet upthe deadline since the entire ports has to be released at the same time this is where microsoft stands out its easy for the X360 to get a game out in a crunch time and get the work done. PS3 definately needs atleast more than a year if they wana meet the exact quality of the PS3

Hype? Haze has absolutely next to no hype right now if you compare it to Stalker. Its just announced 3-4 months ago, some screens have been out and its being compared to Crysis and is being expected to be just above a decent FPS for the PS3 but visually beautiful. PS3 timed exclusivity doesn't give it hype. Anyone who says he's getting PS3 for a game like Haze will be laughed at.

Even Killzone 2, pre-rendered trailer is useless now since people know how the over-hyped Killzone turned out.

Right now, the only over-hyped games on the PS3 are MGS4, FF13 and to a little extent, Warhawk, Lair and the new PSN Interface - HOME.

Params is right about that. Haze is still very impressive though. It's graphically comparable to Drake's fortune. They even have a similar jungle level, so hopefully, we'll get to see some comparison shots in the future.
