3D structure of HIV is 'revealed'

The 3D structure of the virus which causes Aids has been revealed for the first time, scientists say.

The variable size and shape of HIV has made it hard to map, the team said in the journal Structure.

So the UK-German team took hundreds of images of viruses, that are 60 times smaller than red blood cells, and used a computer programme to combine them.

Oxford University's Professor Stephen Fuller said the 3D map would assist in understanding how the virus grows.

Scientists looked in detail at the morphology of the virus.

Unusual features

He told the BBC: "You say can you show me the structure of the HIV virus and the question is which one.

"HIV is very variable. It varied in diameter by a factor of three."

The way the research team, from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at Oxford University, dealt with this was by taking multiple images at different tilts.

Working with colleagues in Heidelberg and Munich, they took about 100 images of 70 individual HIV viruses and then looked at similarities.

Despite the variability, the team found some consistent features.

T cells

This included the finding that the core of virus - which is cone-shaped - spans the width of the viral membrane.

But there are spikes on the outside which bind to human immune cells, called T cells, and allow the virus to invade them.

The significance of this is that whereas most viruses have internal structures which define the size, in the HIV virus it is the membrane which defines the size.

This puts constraints on the way it can assemble, the team said.

"This could inform the development of more effective therapeutic approaches," he added.

But Professor Fuller, who continues to work on HIV, acknowledges that a new HIV vaccine or treatment resulting from his research was a long way off.

But he says the research could provide an insight into the way to prevent the virus from assembling.

Treatments?

Like any virus, HIV is not a cell but rather strands of genetic code wrapped in protein.

The virus invades living cells and take them over by usurping the cell's genetic code with its own.

Roger Pebody, treatment specialist at HIV/Aids charity Terrence Higgins Trust, said: "Revealing the 3D structure of HIV may not sound very exciting but it's actually really useful, giving us more information about the virus and how it grows.

"The more we understand about HIV, the more likely we are to be able to develop effective treatments and hopefully one day a cure."

All the best......but as all our parents n teachers thought us....prevention is better than cure....but honestly its no fun with a condom :)

Well, the HIV virus can surely be beaten, after all, its just a Virus :bleh:

Nice article. good to hear that theres progress.

Unsafe sex any1? :P....

Naah..

Naah..

had it been just a virus it would not have invaded human immune system.

what it exactly does....

unsafe sex / infected blood transfusion / mother to baby vertical transmission these are three proven transmissions methods. (direct blood contact may also transmit like a doctor being injured with a knife or needle or instrument while treating a positive patient (scary but not that seen regularly) or while playing or interacting with another person when both have open wounds (thats why nba players refused to play with that superstar player forgot the name).

kissing and using littered toilet / utensils are not yet completely proven to transmit disease.

now when virus enters your body --->

it attacks your cd4, cd8 , t group cells (these are the backbone of your body defense mechanism)

virus it self is a RNA (a strand f protein)

gets itself integrated into the host cell DNA

resides there for years waiting for trigger and meanwhile reducing the strength of your immune system

when the trigger comes (it could be a simple cold or like that event) it suddenly collapses the immune system

this will make human vulnerable to many a diseases and that takes life.

prevention :
avoid unsafe sex
if necessary take blood from reputed blood bank only (if you can get your trusted near and dear one to donate its best)

HIV it self is a very vulnerable virus its susceptible to normal room temperature within 6-8 mins.

proper sanitisation if you are in human care business(hair cutting saloon, hotels) and if you are a customer you should be extra carefull in selecting you choice of these places.

my personal advise : please avoid shave at barber`s place (i have seen one patient with history of getting infected from there)

beware, bepatient, be with in your self and enjoy life.

WTF? :O thats it for me no more shaves from the barber :S

Thanks for the layman explanation with few common jargons. You are the doctor to go to. :hap2:

medpal, are you in the Medical field? :P. I guess so.

Nice layman's explanation. :ohyeah:.

But, um, does "Kissing" really transmit the virus? I though its only through blood transfer that, the virus could get transmitted :ohyeah:.

@goldenfrag : note the red coloured text kissing is not proven to be tansmitting the disease so not to worry there.
and yes i am in medical field ... infact i am a doctor.
