3g frequency band in india

What frequency band is used for 3G phones in India? I guess it is WCDMA 2100 Mhz for downlink and 1900 Mhz for uplink. Is this correct?

Do all modern smartphones work on all frequencies? I want to buy a Nexus 5 from outside India and wondering if it will work here.
