3G pilots likely in India by year-end, Moto exec says

India will host at least two 3G pilot projects by the end of the year, according to the regional chief of Motorola Inc.

Amit Sharma, a regional vice president at Motorola, said the pilot projects would likely be run by private wireless service providers. Both government-owned service providers, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., are seeking suppliers of 3G infrastructure equipment and services. The test networks are expected to be operational in India by early next year, according to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), which represents GSM service providers in India.

The most promising opportunities for 3G here are expected be in the enterprise market centered in urban areas, and solutions for rural users, according to Sharma.

Reacting to official perceptions here that India is better off moving straight to fourth-generation wireless technology rather than opting for 3G, Sharma said there are no 4G standards and the technology will take time to develop and deploy.

It was widely expected here that a 3G spectrum licensing policy would have been ready by now. The cellular industry has asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to speed up introduction of 3G. The COAI said the introduction of 3G services will solve the spectrum crunch here.
