BUT the strange thing is tht IT GETS DETECTED but i cannot see any Partitions.

If it gets detected, you should be able to see it here

Control panel>Admin tools> Computer management> Disk management

Right click on the drive (where it shows up on the left pane)> Initialize> Format

Thats why 3.5" HDD enclosures require the power brick. But i read somewhere that u can use 2 USB ports for the rquired juice.
Here is the whole deal (as i understand)
Normal 3.5" HDD:

Larger and need more power. So use a power brick.(or 2 USB ports but im not sure about it)
Laptop HDDs:

Smaller, require low power (as they run off batteries)so only require 1 USB port for power.
Correct me if im wrong :)

@ kumar,

That power adaptor / brick is used not only for more juice but also to provide +12V required by normal 3 1/2 hdd's. (unless you get 3/1/2 " hdd's running on +5V only)
so

For Normal 3 1/2" hdd's

Power adaptor / brick used to provide more juice plus +12V required for operation of HDD. i dont know how using 2 usb ports will provide the required 12V.??
For laptop 2 1/2" hdd's

if low power / low capacity used then one usb port should be enough. for larger capacity drives requiring more power 2 usb ports required to supply the needed power.
@ asky,

as others have already suggested before use disk management to rectify the drive.

A few weeks back i had faced a similar situation. i had hooked up my sony digital camera to the pc.

got all the hardware detection notices etc ....but the camera was not listed at all in "my computer" as removable storage device.. i dont remember if it was displayed in device manager or not.

so i went into disk management. selected the digicam and gave it a drive letter, then i right clicked on the right hand pane there and selected open ....voila all the contents of the camera were visible and i could transfer the images to the pc.

it definitely looks like a win xp sp2 software / driver / config issue (i.e. it is not a hardware issue). With all the numerous updates for xp i really dont know what caused this. previously the camera used to work normally.

Here are the Pics of the drive......

Hope this makes things Clear

Looking at this picture I placed 2 USB cases in my hand a 2.5" and a 3.5" to compare with the picture and have concluded from the size that the HDD is a 2.5"

Possibly the cable is bad - I had one of these go bad on me - these cables are available in Lamington Road. I got a spare for around 75/-.

... and ... I too had dropped my 2.5" case from my table to the floor - 3 feet - and the case went rolling across the floor and the Seagate 20GB drive still works fine :)

hey.....thank you guys for the help.
Well......the drive is getting detected....i.e i get this Screen .

BUT i cannot see this drive in disk management while the drive is connected :(

@deejay here's the screeny:

When i connect the HDD i get the normal windows sound(i.e the sound you get on connecting any USB device) BUT then cant see any partitions.

EDIT:tht 37.31GB HDD is my 40GB PATA not the portable HDD.
