Those temps are the result of crappy fan settings in the vga BIOS. IIRC, the max speed it runs at is 20 ~ 25%. All you need to do is either grab one of those modified bios available at XS (At your discretion though) which have a better fan profile (Upto 100%). This has brought temps down by 15 degrees or so. Another thing to do is remove stock goop and apply AS5 or MX-2. That also has had great effect in bringing down temps.

Or, slap on the Accelero S1 Rev.2 and see those temps fall by 30 C ;)

or best is that u trade your card with my

Better still if you do not want to mod the BIOS , get an Asus flavor of the card like me as those modified BIOS as been made from the Asus BIOS. :P I have heard that the Fan speed at 70% has brought down the idle temps below 50 deg and load temps below 65 deg on the 4850 cards.

ok, so the Asus bios allows fan speed control? me thinkin of it then. any links? gonna post a separate thread in a while on whether its worth upgradin from a 88GT ;)

Guys... What's the guarantee on GeCube... Sapphire comes with 2 Yrs which i believe is crap... These are all reference cards by ATi so build quality would be almost same... Just different stickers on HSF... So it will come down to brands which offers the best after sales service...

Doesn't ATI cards have some utility like Rivatuner where we can modify fan speed at OS level ?

Yes. ASUS is the only card that supports in out of the box :)

Not necessarily :P RBE v1.11 allows you to mod any BIOS :D

These cards are not supported by Riva Tuner and other such tools yet. However the Asus card comes with a software Smart Doctor which can be used to control the fan speeds. However this tool has been made to run on only Asus cards, so people have been downloading a modified copy of the Asus BIOS and flashing their 4850 cards and this allows the Smart Doctor tool to run on their cards. Alternatively there are also other BIOS dumps doing the rounds in which the fan speed profiles has been permanently modified so that the fans run at a higher speed. But the Asus BIOS seems to be the choice for now since it can be flashed on to most of the reference cards without issues and you can use the software to setup the speed profiles on the fly.

Of course. 4850 performs 30% better without AA.. and with AA, it is more than 50% faster than 8800GT..:D:

4850 beats the crap out of 8800GT and even 9800GTX at resolutions 1680 x 1050 and over when AA and AF are enabled. At lower resolutions all these cards perform fine, the difference will not be that noticeable.

agree with u lord....err !! i get scared with ur fore name & avatar..
I completely agree with Nemesis, but at lower resolutns thre is 10-15% diff across cards wch is noticible but not big..
:D:

hmm...so at 1440X900 it seems the 8800GT shud do me good service for the forseeable future :D cos me not changing the display the next 1-2yrs, just upped from a 1024 15" CRT last month :bleh:

Absolutely. Unless you wanna go hi-res (1680x1050 and above with higher AA and AF) gaming there is no need to plonk down your money on upgrade.
