Hi!

*Just a noob query*

My friend was thinking of upgrading his memory from 2GB to 4GB.. Since he has and will use Win XP 32 only and games never will require more than 2GB, will it make a difference?

The 4GB is also going to be 800 MHz.. I told him it won't but just wanted to get a second opinion.

TIA. cheers!:)

well it doesent hurt to have more mem in the system.. i myself have 4GB mem.. and am using vista 32.. so yea it doesent utilise the entire 4GB and it shows only 3.2 GB available.. but ive read on many games recomended sys requirement it say that its best to have 3 GB of memory in system.. so with ram being so cheap today i think prolly a good idea to have 4 GBs in ... atleast many newer games utilize around 90% of memory in my system (30% is already used by the system) ..

well this is just my opinion .. others might think differently.. tell u what .. i think if hes under a tight budget 2 GB is enuf for now.. but if not then 4GB will always be better..

There certainly is a difference between 4 GB and 2 GB for many resource intensive games. As long as he does not anything else more important to get, I would recommend the upgrade.

Also, Its not like RAM is costly these days. You can get a 2 x 2GB Kit for well under 4k most of the time. I got my GSKill 4GBPQ 1000MHz (does 1100MHz @ 5-5-3-15 @ < 2.1V) for just 4.2k a while back.

4GB won't make any diff if he is using 32 bit systems.

Also when Games say - 3GB recommended,, it is refering to 64 bit systems as they can adress more than 2Gb memory

the 32 bit operating systems recognize and use only upto 3gb memory.u need 64bit windows versions to use more than 3gb of memory

So basically 4 gigs is better than 2 but won't show up as a huge performance improvement will it? He's a light user apart from the games..

PS: He's got E4500, ASUS mobo, 8600 GT

my friends got 5gb in his sytem, but only shows up 3.2gb in windows.3gb is enough for gaming as we will have extra ram on graphic card as well

Try using Vista with 2GB RAM and then with 4GB RAM and then tell me if u don't find a difference. :@

2GB RAM is now the bare minimum for gaming. 3GB is fine but then for dual channel boost, it's better to have 4GB RAM and use x64 editions of OS.

However, since ur friend is a light user and not a power user and still with XP, he can just stay with 2GB for now. I don't feel the necessity to go for 4GB for XP et all. If it would have been Vista, it's highly recommendable. :ohyeah:

dude if u would be using xp 32bit only then there wuold be very little performance diffrence even while playing latest games on my pc with xp and 2gbof ram abt 70 to 80% of ram is used so wats the use of getting 4gb for xp;) .Ahh if u upgrade to vista then its another story.

Games load faster with 4GB, Crysis loads in half time... some same speed... these days since ram is so cheap 4GB is fine... get transcend 4GB man...
