Hey guys,

Planning for kerala trip in may.
Looking for ideas and how to avoid wasting money on useless things which most tourists do unknowingly
This is roughly my plan
Land at kochi airport , head to munnar , stay in munnar 2 full days.
Head to allepey and 1 full day with night stay.
Next day at beach stay in varkala and night stay.
Head to trivandrum in the morning and cover 2 or 3 popular places locally and return from trivandrum airport.

Quite a laid back plan . Since am going with little kids am not interested in adventure sports

Varkala was the highlight of my trip but I went in December, not sure how it will be this time of the year. Please don't have any high exceptions with tea there, Kerala has the worst tea I have tasted and i have tasted tea from most of India.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. We decided to just visit munnar and allepey for the time being with most of our time being at munnar. I plan to do a full kerala tour some other time probably during the non summer and non rainy seasons.
Does anyone have a taxi operator phone number to help during the travel for my stay

I assume you're doing a houseboat trip at Alleppey. Please book through a known Good agency. I booked a houseboat there via a known contact for my honey moon and the boat guy was a no show saying mechanical issues. Anyway since we had a very packed schedule otherwise we spent that day lazing around on the hotel pool we had booked for stay. I hope you are booking at some proper hotel. Too many homestays pretending to be resorts out there

Varkala/kovalam are nice but its damn hot. Go visit one of the kochi beaches and tick off the beach. Try to go early morning on a weekday. You don't even have to go to some fancy beach. I have an aunt whose backyard opens into the beach.
I usually book a cab from indusgo,

Can't really recommend any local agencies. Not very different from uber or ola. They'll just take their cut and give you contact of some random driver. Might as well book someone on uber on rental and negotiate something

Rainy is imo the best time to see kerala unless you want to go trekking or visit some waterfalls

I stayed in this hotel https://maps.app.goo.gl/Piu96gZ5txftKz8m7
Hotel guy hooked us up with a boat guy, we took couple of hours boat ride ( 4pm to 7pm) to view sunset.

If you/family likes wildlife then do visit parambikulam tiger reserve. The van tour during the day was total flop as we didn't see any tigers but if you stay the night there, there then you might get lucky. The food was nothing to write home about and please bring insect/mosquito spray/cream for the night time. Ours was during December some 4/5 years ago so I am not sure how much has changed. We did all the booking offline but it appears you can do it online also link.

Tried the boat house thing during college days and felt so so about staying the entire night in it so we planned for regular land based resort in allepey and we'll take a 3 hour shikara to check out the backwaters

Went to Thekkady the previous Saturday & Sunday.
Weather was fine. it was drizzling very lightly at times, which made the climate awesome.
Went to Periyar boat safari, Tea Garden and Spice Garden visits, Suruli falls.

Not a good season to go but hope you enjoy still.
Would recommend to do some beautiful treks in Munnar if you can.

For Thekkady , Do watch the kathakali show and not the dancing light and all show. I made a big mistake taking my family for that stupid fountain show instead of Kathakali.
