Guys,

I am planning on buying the Vu 50 inch LED TV from Ebay. Is the TV any good, does any one have any experience of any Vu TVs? This is going to be my first TV (the last time I have seriously watched or considered watching a TV was in 1998)

http://www.ebay.in/itm/Vu-50-inch-HD-LED-TV-Model-LED-50K160-/251501627805

I am going to use it only for watching movies off the USB / HDMI and may be hook it up to a spare system to watch movies off the system.

I have tried looking up the Vu website but the details regarding the TV seem to be scant. I do not know what formats it supports off the USB and are there any caveats?

The price seems to hit the sweet spot and I am not too keen on 3D TVs since 3D doesn't really agree with my eyes or my head.

Also, are there any other TVs that I could consider in this size and price range?

Thanks in advance!

yes,me too looking for more info on this....would prefer this over Samsung or LG if the picture quality is the same .

alas no review for the same any where on the net.also no pics of the connection panel, info on website to is sketchy. Guess it has no WiFi,no info whether it has a lan port atleast.will need a media player.....too risky...need to check physically.has any one seen this in the flesh?

I would suggest you to stay away from Vu, Do not buy without seeing it first hand.
Picture quality and sound for Samsung is defiantly better.
Also this tv is pretty slow , i doubt it'll be able to play 720p /1080p.

It's not even that cheap to take so much risk.

@avi : "LED" TV is a creation of Samsung marketing. All TVs are LCD TVs - the older LCD TVs were backlit by CCFLs, now it is LED (direct-, edge- etc.).
@soulweaver & @mh09ad5578 : if the main purpose is watching movies, there is no LCD/LED TV that can beat a plasma at that budget. Plasma will always give better picture at any given price point, compared to any brand LCD/LED.
The primary constraint with plasma are the reflections of the screen. In case, you do not have a window or a door bang in front of the TV, go ahead and buy a 51" plasma, Samsung or LG. Panasonic is not easily available & they have stated that they are exiting the plasma line altogether.

The biggest draw back of plasma TVs is the power consumption, a plasma TV consumes at least 2-3 times the power of led TV of same size. If that is not a problem then plasma TV has the best picture quality.

@Jambumali yep 51 inch plasmas for around 60k make awesome VFM . i checked both the lg and Samsung models but the problem is the sales people said that they were only HD ready sets (720p) not full hd, also when comparing the picture quality to a comparable LED the brightness and the sharpness of a plasma is not comparable....i guess individually it should not matter but in a a showroom the difference shows.

Check out Samsung PL51F5500.

@mh09ad5578 : despite all the hype around full-HD unless you sit with your nose next to your TV, you can't see the difference. HD-ready TV even allows to better feel of SD-content! You can enjoy your downloads/rips better on HD-ready set. Most of the time we do not sit at the recommended distances for the resolution to make a difference. Google for some the TV watching distance charts, you will understand what I mean. UltraHD/OLED is a different ball game provided you have the content & a thick-enough-wallet for it!

In the shop under bright shop lights, plasmas will look duller & washed out , that won't happen not in your home. The only prob is reflections. Plasma pic is much more natural, rather than the highly post-processed (hi-saturation, hi-contrast) pic of LED/LCD.

Take everyone's comments/guidance, but finally, take a few movies/TV-rips, play them in the shop & decide based on what your eyes tell you!

I do agree with above post. I extensively used a 40" HD Ready old LCD in my place for 3 months. Mostly 720p rips(10~6 GB), Normal 480p TV Show release and occasional 1080p(~15GB) rips. I was more than satisfied with quality of video in my viewing distance. Perhaps 6 to 8 feet?.

It made me realize that a 32" HD Ready TV is more than enough for my normal viewing pleasure.

Unless I got the media to feed, the pixels doesn't matter. And I do have the media to splurge. Max bit rate rips..50GB whatever they call it. Just check my signature for my HD space. But that's home. Where i have a 42" 1080p.

Also most of the Plasmas in the showrooms aren't set at a high brightness because of fear of burn-in. I use my Samsung Plasma at the 'Movie' setting all the time and it is easily as bright as any LED out there.
Plus if you really want to enjoy watching Sports, action movies or play games on a console, Plasma is the way to go.
Add to the fact that it is a very mature technology meaning most if not all the kinks have been ironed out.

i bought a Samsung PL51F5500 around 2 years back. After 1 year & 2 months its panel went faulty. Vertical colored lines on both sides. As Samsung gives only 1 year warranty, they asked me to pay 28K INR to get panel changed.

I am still fighting with Samsung to get sorted out !!

Sorry to hear that. LG offers extended warranty up to 5 years. For some reason Samsung which offers extended warranty on LED/LCD TVs does not do so with plasmas. For that reason alone I would prefer LG over Samsung, even though Samsung picture quality is a notch above LG's.

I have a 32" 1080p VU LED TV. Don't remember the model number. It was quite cheap since the model was being phased out so I got it at ~17k at Croma about 1 year back. Its been working fine. It can play HD files via USB fine. The only complaint would probably be viewing angles but only at extreme angles, viewing from the front is good.
