* What's your Budget?
50K Max.
* What will be your primary usage for the notebook be?
MATLAB/LABVIEW/Simulink etc, surfing, casual gaming and movies (occasionally).
* What size and weight considerations do you have?
14" or 15" is fine. As for weight, I wouldnt want the heaviest of the lot!
* Any brand that you prefer, or any brand that you detest?
Staying away from HCL and the like. And prefer not to deal with those companies whose A.S.S is poor! Basically looking for a hassle free laptop. Its like buying a Toyota, which is reliable and does the job well. Wouldn't want a flashy one which would spend a significant amount of time at the service center!
* Any other considerations?
Battery life is important. My sisters MBP lasts for almost 6 hours! Something comparable would be nice. Its not like I need it for 4-5 hours all the time, but the more the better, right? I dont like to travel with the cord around all the time! Also, a Full HD screen and support for Ubuntu would be great, but are not requirements.

Dell XPS 15 with the following config for 50k

Intel Core i5 2410M CPU

4GB RAM

500 GB 7200rpm HDD

Nvidia GT525M 1 GB

15.6" 720p screen

Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

You can get 2 or 3 years extended cover on it if you wish, in addition to the default 1 year complete cover onsite warranty.

Try and extend the budget to get Dell XPS 15 with 2Gb GT 540M or HP 6121tx.

Not HP cuz he mentioned in his post he wants to go for a brand that has excellent service and HP does not have excellent service.

As for the 540M, its not really THAT important as 540M is basically an overclocked GT525M. There is not a wide variation in performance between the two GPUs.

Fair Enough. Dell XPS 15 is the thing for you then . I have that laptop and I can vouch that it is a excellent package.

Extended warranty will shoot up your budget !

^^

There is Sony Vaio CB15FG. But its 52k.(After discount)

You get:

Core i5 2410M

4GB RAM

500 GB 7200rpm

AMD 6630M 1 GB

Full HD 1920x1080 15.5" screen

Win 7 Home Premium

If you get the CB15FG, do get 2 years extended warranty on it later on, it only costs 2490Rs. :). Get it before your 1 year warranty expires.

i will also advise you to get extended warranty as it costs just 2.5k and will give you peace of mind for 3 years.

Went to the Sony center today and got a quote of 53.9K with the free bag and a quote of 54.9K + 500 GB External HDD and the bag from Reliance Digital. Where could i get it for even lesser? (Bangalore)

^^In bangalore, go to Vaio flagship store in SP road for best prices,They will give you decent discounted price on their own then later you can bargain further and remember the free bag comes directly from sony so that is not any discount or freebie from dealer,i think you can get it at 53k at vaio flagship store,SP road.
