Hello folks, sorry that my first post on these forums is a query. I need help to decide on my rig.

Well, this is my first serious buy really, in the sense that until now I have been an average desktop user and hence have never really cared about inquiring & reading reviews about peripherals. A local trustworthy PC assembler is who I have relied upon so far. But things have changed and I need a decent system for myself. Rest of the preferences & information is shared under following subheadings.

1. Budget 50K, less is better.

2. Intended Buy

a. CPU - Intel Core i7 920

b. Motherboard - Intel DX58SO (Reccos in similar price range welcome)

c. Cabinet - CM 690 (if budget's exceeded, ready to compromise)

d. SMPS - Corsair VX 450 (not knowledgeable about power supplies, this suggestion and the above one are taken from another thread)

e. Storage - Intel X25-M SSD and 1TB HDD ( Brand reccos please )

f. RAM - 6GB ( Brand reccos again )

g. Graphics card - Any decent low/mid-range card. I do NOT intend to play any games.

h. UPS - Need a good one. (have no knowledge about power-related components)

i. Monitor- LCD with DVI-D port is a must. AOC 22'' is what i was thinking of. 19'' will also do.

Note/Hint: I want this rig to be fairly future proof.

Intended use Basically for development & study/research purposes(kernel/OS related) and a bit of music making/multimedia. NO games.

Brand Preferences One thing that is striking about Intel compared with others in case of motherboards is their support & professionalism. I was checking out MSI's Indian website few weeks back & it was simply useless, clicking on any link redirected to the home page with a strange error or a similar issue, I don't remember exactly. But as I said earlier, this is my first serious buy and hence I don't have many brand prejudices. I am welcome to suggestions.

Overclocking

Yes, but only basic tinkering & experiment.

OS Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit.

I'd suggest a different mobo, especially if you intend to overclock. The MSI Pro-E is a fairly decent budget mobo. IIRC it retails for around 14K. I bought my i7920+Pro-E combo for around 25-26K from SMC.

Hello ajish65, thanks for the reply. As I said earlier, overclocking is not my main concern, and also the DX58SO can overclock fairly well. But considering MSI, I have the following concerns: MSI support & linux compatibility. While linux compatibility might seem a trivial issue, I want to make sure that I don't have to struggle with drivers et al.

Thanks again, folks. However, spending 16k on a graphics card is not on my list really, as I have suggested in the title post.

Nvidia 8400 GS seems just about right, thanks.

What about other components, folks ? I'd really appreciate some help.

I have been browsing on the forums, and I have noticed that nobody is using the Intel X58 motherboard. I am really willing to buy it due to good compatibility with linux.

Is there a specific reason for this absence ? I know overclocking isn't straightforward, but what else ? Support issues, availability, price, design...what's the possible reason ? I need to be sure before buying it, guys please suggest.
