Don't forget to install crystaldiskinfo free to keep monitoring its temps all the time. 5TB portable hdd run hot & running them at 50C+ temps consistently will result in shorter lifespan. Also, never run these hdd using front panel usb port on pc cabinet or self powered usb hubs with no external power adapter.

Edit: reply to below post by @awestorr Not to the same degree but yes especially if cabinet is more than 1-2 years old.

Does this apply to 3tb external hdds too?

no such thing as front usb thing. As long as the power draw required by the HDD is within the usb specification, no issues.
Theoretically you are right but practically not. Many cabinets' front panel usb ports do not provide same amount of power as backside usb ports on motherboard due to various reasons.
