The last PC i built was using TE's help so I'm back. I'm looking to the upgrade sometime end of jan/feb 2016, just beginning the research now.

My main computer right now is a 2013 mbp which suffices for pretty much everything. Bought a PS4 thinking mbp + ps4 would be enough for gaming needs but I guess controllers aren't meant for me.

  1. What is your budget?
    • 40K (not set in stone but yeah, need something that will last a while)
  2. What is your existing hardware configuration (component name - component brand and model)
    • CPU - Intel E7300
    • Proc: Core2Duo E7300
    • Mobo: Gigabyte P45-UD3R
    • Ram: G Skill Pi Black 2x2gb
    • GPU: EVGA GTX 260 SP 216 Superclocked 896mb
    • HDD: 320GB WD3200AAJS (WD Caviar SE)
    • HDD: 500GB WD5000AAKX (WD Caviar Blue)
    • PSU: Corsair TX 650W
    • Cabinet: CM 690 with 3/4 additional fans and 2 LED tubes.
    • Monitor: Dell 2208WFPt
    • Keyboard: CM Storm Trigger
    • Mouse: Razer Deathadder
  3. Which hardware will you be keeping (component name - component brand and model)
    • Whatever I can
  4. Which hardware component are you looking to buy (component name). If you have already decided on a configuration then please mention the (component brand and model) as well, this will help us in fine tuning your requirement.
    • CPU - Intel Core i5 6400
    • Motherboard - any compatible motherboard
    • GPU - GTX960
    • Memory - 8 gigs possibly 16
  5. Where will you buy this hardware? (Online/City/TE Dealer)
    • Bangalore
    • Open to online purchase
  6. Would you consider buying a second hand hardware from the TE market
    • Yes
  7. What is your intended use for this PC/hardware
    • Gaming
    • Programming
    • VMs
  8. If you will be playing games then which type of games will you be playing?
    • Witcher3
    • Shadow of mordor
    • World of warcraft
  9. What is your preferred monitor resolution for gaming and normal usage
    1. Gaming - 1600x1080 since my monitor only does that. Though higher would be welcome.
  10. Are you looking to overclock?
    • No
  11. Which operating system do you intend to use with this configuration?
    • Windows 10 64 bit

Thanks!

You need only replace the processor, motherboard, RAM, GPU and maybe the monitor as well but will set you back by a few thousands more. You can re-use the other parts. Without the monitor you'll be able to do it under 40k.

Are you sure its 1600x1080 and not 1600x900? 1080p gaming is a good standard though.

Resolution of OP's display is 1680*1050. For this resolution GTX960 or R9 285 would be great for couple of years. Pair it with 5th gen i5 and you would be set in 40k mark nicely. i5-6400 goes for roughly 15k. A good B150 chipset motherboard would be another ~7k. GTX960 is approx ~15k and 8GB DDR4 RAM should be ~3.5-4k mark.

  • CPU - Intel Core i5 6500 -14600,
  • Motherboard - MSI H170A PC Mate -9500,
  • GPU - Zotac GTX960 2GB -15000,
  • Memory - Corsair Vengeance 8GB 2133Mhz DDR4 -3900.
  • TOTAL -43,000.

I just read this and I dunno what you guys make of it. But would going for a 970 instead of the 960 be worth it?
depends - if you plan to upgrade your monitor then yes it's worth it (the 970 is roughly twice as fast as the 960)
be advised though, the 970 is the minimum so not sure how it will do in vr.
also, fyi the new 14/16nm gpus will be out in july. you could wait or get a second hand card to use till then. this option will be better if you want to dive into vr without using sli/crossfire.

Oh yeah. Probably going to go for a conservative upgrade for now and avoid the VR hype train for now. I'll update here once I get it done. thanks!

On the verge of buying... how does this look?

Finally got the following.
i5 6600k
asus z170 pro gaming
gskill 2400 ddr4 1x8gb
hyperx 212

Running into some issues with win10 behaving badly. HDD light stays on and it just freezes for long times randomly.

Thanks for the help!

Try (re)installing Windows 10 with only ONE disk connected where you want to do the install. You can plug in your other disks later on. Make sure the "SATA mode" is properly selected (I believe you should pick AHCI) and take care of whether you are choosing to go for Secure Boot enabled or not - that makes a difference too.

Also, do update the BIOS (I think you can do it from BIOS itself by enabling Internet) for your ASUS mobo. I got the ASUS H170-Pro and it seems lots of BIOS updates have been coming in regularly including stability fixes (for me it was graphics glitches).

Speaking of Revivals, I sent you a PM about a project that you were involved in about 20 years ago with Age of Empires.
Good luck with everything- I hope to hear from you.
