Hi Guys!!

I have a Dell XPS M1330 -- Dell XPS M1330 User Review

It's a getting a tad too old -- so I thought I'll pump some life into it -- My basic storage happens via NAS and External HDD -- so I was hoping to do away with the internal drive.

Replacing it with an SSD -- Now I see most SSD's are SATA 3 while I'm unsure if my Laptop supports that so confused as to will I see a good performance increase over my regular harddrive if I go with the upgrade.

Also please check out the specs of my laptop and please suggest which SSD to go for -- I'm not looking at too much space -- just enough for a boot drive

I'll be buying it from the Sell-and-trade section here -- not investing much money into this old laptop.

Lack of SATA 3 (600MB/s) is mostly going to affect burst and sequential speeds. Your random read/write speeds won't exceed SATA 2 speeds especially for a 64GB drive. Since you're using it as a boot drive, random read/write speeds are whats going to matter.

So does that mean going for a SSD is not a great idea ?

No I'm saying the opposite - that even on SATA 2 channels, an SSD will show great improvements because random read/writes matter (and these random R/Ws will not easily saturate a SATA 2 link).

Great so any specific model/brand I should be looking at ? -- I'm purchasing this with a motive that it could be re-used when I build my gaming pc as my boot drive in that and I'll retire my laptop then.

I would look at a Crucial M4 or Samsung 830. Unfortunately since you were looking at a second hand drive, you will mostly find Sandforce based drives, which should preferably be avoided.

Crucial M4 is a good option --- apart from that I saw a few others on the Selling threads -- OCZ Vertex 3 -- OCZ Agility 3 -- Corsair Force 3

Samsung will be too out of budget I think -- looking at a sub 3k solution at the moment -- not willing to shell out too much on this old laptop which may die any moment :P

^ Yeah forgot to mention, the Samsung would probably be expensive so not a viable option, so leaves only the M4. All the drives you've listed are Sandforce unfortunately, which is what I said.
