Graphic Cards 6800GS ..... nvidia answer to GTO's

nVidias answer to ATi GTOs:

The King is Dead! Long Live the King!

For most of its life the 6800 GT was NVIDIA's best high end value. The 6800 Ultra was both too hard to find and too expensive to be worth the investment, while the 6800 GT performed very well and wasn't a bad overclocker either. But ever since the 7800 series came along, the 6800 GT just hasn't been as viable an option. Today we can find cheap 7800 GT parts for about as much as an average 6800 GT (~$320).

And on top of that, today sees the introduction of a part that performs just as well as the 6800 GT but costs about $100 less. The 6800 GS looks like it hits the sweet spot between price and performance this holiday season. Aside from cutting the cost of the 6800 GT, the 6800 GS doesn't cost that much more than a vanilla 6800 with 256MB of RAM. As the vanilla 6800 performs just slightly better than the 6600 GT, we can say with confidence that the 6800 GS has taken over the 6800 line and is the only real option left of the bunch.

Unfortunately, we are hearing that only EVGA will be building the new king of value, and then only until the first quarter of next year. With all the advantages the 6800 GS holds over its 6800 series brethren, we would prefer to see it stick around more than any other recently introduced upper midrange part.

Putting 6800 GS cards together in SLI is not worth it when you can get a 7800 GTX for less than 2x the price. Since the 6800 GS will be a short lived product (from what we understand) SLI as an upgrade is not a viable option - stick with the single card here or go with something faster if you need to spend more money. We don't like SLI upgrades anyway, but it's even less smart an idea if you can't be sure the card will be around much longer.

This card does for NVIDIA what the X800 GTO did for ATI a short time ago. The X800 GTO falls short in terms of value compared to the 6800 GS, which is both impressive and exactly why NVIDIA wanted to bring it out now. With initial prices on upcoming ATI parts looking to be a little high for their performance, this seals a recommendation for NVIDIA for the holiday season: if you've got about $220 to spend on a graphics card, the 6800 GS is the part to have.

All the new parts add a lot of confusion to the mix. With both ATI and NVIDIA bringing out essentially redundant parts, it's hard to know what to recommend or buy. We would love to see NVIDIA drop the entire 6800 line with the exception of the 6800 GS. That would clear everything up for us on their end. As for ATI, it is very hard to address the amount of spring cleaning their line up needs (especially with the X1000 series parts coming out soon).

Great move by Nv to counter the GTO's though a GTO2 is still a much better deal. Will whip the 6800GS in almost all games. :D
that right but as u said in a nvidia thread about 6600 DDR2 ..... availability is a major issue with ATi too :P and if u want a GTO2 in india then i will say stop dreaming .....

and in the pricing front GTO2 is high priced than 6800GS ...... and in there are not much GTO2 are left in the market even in US .....

Yep so true :D Since the 6800GS is not available anywhere right now, we both stand corrected :D

On the other hand chk out this pic, anyone who points out some horrid IQ difference between ATi's card and Nvidia's card gets reps from me. Eddy, sunny and funky cant answer this, they already know. I'd like your views as well rahul ;)

here i have marked it ..... its the same shadow bug ...... i know it will be removed in future driver releases ....

PS:- stop being such a a** to nvidia ...... lol JK ....waiting for mine reps :D

Hehe you got almost of them. :D

See the horrid blockiness of the reflections on the Nv card :D

Well i am not being an a** to NV in fact i have been a NV fan and used to argue with ATi fans long ago. But then the IQ started taking a back place and FPS was given more emphasis. Better FPS is great but not at the cost of IQ. So i just had to switch to ATi.

But i dunno why Nv supporters accept mediocrity from Nv in terms of IQ. If you are buying a $600 or 400 worth of shit from Nv expect them to deliver the best. How would you like if your Sony hi-fi came with inferior sound. You guys arent complaining is the sole reason Nv isnt bothered to fix this, or the shadow "bug" or the shimmering. But anyways i guess you aren't bothered with IQ as well..............*sigh*

EDIT: Damn !
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to rahul again.
Remind me later.

yes ati does have better image quality. but i dint notice any diff in 9700pro & 6600gt in the games i played on both. thats what my point is. u dont notice those small things when ur actually playing the game. so its not that big a issue, although for someppl it is a big issue & its usually the ati ppl. heh. so its gonna get fixed sooner or later.

oops wat happened to rep systems .....

about driver bug i will say every driver has some bug ....

do u realise how much time Ati taken to finally to get some respectable scores in openGL games ..... anyways no hard feeling blady i was just joking .... i have taken GTX not becoz of i am a nvdia fan or watever ......

i have taken it coz only it was available if ATi's competitive solution was available at that time i wud have taken that if it was better ...... as u can see availability is a major issue in indian market .....

like i have taken ASUS which is a good mobo no doubts but i wud prefer DFi over it any day coz i am in OCing and DFi provides more option for that ..... but again DFi is not available ..... and i am not gonna spend 10k on a mobo without warranty as there was some DFi motherboard were available at that time for sale ....

Rahul

will remind u about reps :) haha

The 6800 GS being priced at 250$ same range as an ATI X800XL which I feel is marginally better. But then again 6800GS has the primitive SM 3.0 support.

Also 250$ is the Retail price, expect it to drop down to 200$ levels in some months, which then would become an awesome buy. Also Blade GTO2 retails for 285$ now a total waste if you ask me...

Also the days of getting an awesome Radeon 9500's, ti 4200's and ti 200 at mid range prices are over.. Infact by spending an extra 100$ a 7800GT is a much better VFM now with actual SM 3.0 support.

I wouldn't notice such small things while playing.
Also the absense of advanced color controls would bother me a lot.

Games look completely washed out to me now after setting up optimal color profiles with appropriate digital vibrance and image sharpening for each game.
Night-Day difference in warcraft, farcry, dow and most of all fable (the game world seems a lot less washed out with just a little vibrance) .

Ofcourse I would get used to it again after a while, but it really makes a huge difference and is something ati needs to add to their drivers asap, shouldn't take more than a week to perfect.

Hey no problems mate. No offence taken. I am fully aware of the problem of sourcing a ATi card in india.

@aces: $263 @ ASS http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/product.asp?pid=12993&ad=pwatch

I know a 7800gt is better by spending a 100$ more but then again most people have budgets and thats the reason why we have cards @ different price points.

Come on UT get a ATi card just this once :P ! The connect 3d unlocks to a x850 XT i guess which should be quite faster than a 6800GS. Just my 2c though.

Well as I mentioned earleir at 200$ this card is a steal. The GTO may be unlocked, but if you do not want to take chances this is an awesome deal..
