I'm looking at 2 models - the Samsung LA40M81B Mosel Blaque Full HD (already ordered, actually), and the LA40R81BX. The price difference is 50K, with the R81BX being cheaper.. it is 1366x768 vs. 1920*1080 for the Mosel Blaque.

I've played SD and DVD sources through both, they both look pretty much the same to me, honestly. I've also taken my cousin's PS3 to the showroom.. at 6' away, I really can't make out much of a difference on Motorstorm. No Blu-Ray/HD-DVD material available here though, so that's a bit of a worry.

What do you guys think? 50K is a lot o'moolah, I can get a PS3 + Denon 1507 in that amount, but still.. FullHD is full HD, besides, the R series will not accept a 1080p input... though that shouldn't be an issue, right?

Oh, and I'm going for a Samsung, as my co. has an SF tie-up with them, and I'm getting a 15-20% discount on all their LCD TVs.

Opinions?

The human eye is incapable of telling the difference between 1080p and 720p for a screen size of 50 in. at a distance of 8 feet. I guess its the same for 40in at 6 feet... save yourself the 50k :)

I haven't seen these two tvs so can't say.But as a general rule, wthether you should go for a 720p or a 180p panel depends on the distance at which you intend to sit from the tv.If you wanna sit closer to the tv, get a 1080p else stick with 720p. So if your viewing distance is 6 feet, then for a 40 inch display 1080p won't make a difference.

Also SD or dvd contents will look the same on both these tvs.If you wanna compare the tvs, play a 1080p video( download it fom the net) and then you will see the difference.Frankly the diff. bet. them isn't that much but ya in a 720p display, there is always some information not being displayed(provided the source is 1080p).....but again for a 40 inch display this shouldn't be that big a deal.

besides there are other factors like contrast ratio, color gamut, color range, etc, etc. which are frankly more important than the resolution of a HD tv. So take a HD source or LOTR dvd and check out the features like contrast, etc, etc. I thought Samsung Mosel Full HD had a better contrast ratio and color range. But if you don't notice any diff. then stick with the cheaper panel.

You can use the Viewing Distance Calculator to find out the exact viewing distance 'Based on Visual Acuity'

for 40" screen it's 5.2 feet and for 50" it's 6 feet, so if your choice is 40" and 6' viewing distance you're better off with a 780p but if you get a PS3 from that money, u'll probably sit closer than 5.2'.. so it's your choice.
