As the title suggests, which is the best value for money and ideal for my setup. The setup i am thinking of building is :-
E6600
2 GB transcend value ram
samsung 997MB
etc,etc.

I guess, these are the current prices of these cards(plz correct me if i am wrong):-
Palit 7600gt - Rs.8900
7900gs - Rs.14,000/-
7900gt - Rs.17k
Or should i go for 7950GT for Rs.20,800/-
Are these prices correct and if so which one should i buy??? I am not really interested in their stock overclocked or extreme versions that companies manufacture.
I plan to use this card as a stop-gap arrangement for around a yr or maybe a little more after which i will be switching to a dx10 card.
I won't be overclocking.
Also which brand is better - xfx or leadtek???

It depends on your amount of gaming and what games you play. I would say, a 7900GS + is what you should be looking at. A 7600GT wont last you an year. The XFX 7950GT is available in the stock overclocked and passive heatsink version only. dont know about Leadtek 7950GT. So I woundnt recommend the XFX 7950GT. much rather go for the X1900XT for 3k more.

For average gaming, if you do not want to spend too much, then 7900GS is the way to go. much better than a 7600GT and not so costly as the 7900GT.

if its only for a year as he said i would say a 7600 GT . no harm in conserving 10k for a better dx10 card which you are anyways going to buy .

nope... its better to go in for a 7600 GT now, and then later after 8 - 12 months get a good DX10 card cause u would have to get one sooner or later

hmmm.. i c ... Which 7600Gt u want to go for ? one from Leadtek ?

i'm of the opinion that you can never be short of GPU power ;)

seriously, by the time DX10 cards hit the mainstream and there's a critical mass of games supporting DX10, it might take quite some time and you might end up making another interim upgrade if you get a mid-range card now.. of course, if the games you play are not graphics intensive, then even a 7300GT will do...

so if u have the budget, might as well invest in a higher end card like the 7950 or X1900XT (Funky is selling 1, check the Sales thread), that will last you a lot longer and allow you to wait for the good DX10 cards' prices to hit the sweet spot before taking the plunge... at least that's how long i hope the 7900GTX will last me ;)

Simple math...

9k (7600GT) + 40k (DX10) - (6~8 months average/low quality graphics)

20k (7900GT/7950GT) + 20k (DX10) - (Best/average quality graphics all the time)

You decide...

Okay you guys make sense.Getting a 7600gt may not be a wise choice.

I would ahve preferred a 7950 considering it has got 512 memmory and it sells for as low as 20 k. But the damn thing has got passive coolers and considering the failure rate of 7900gt cards ,getting a 7950 gt card doesn't seem a sound decision since the 7950 is an overclocked version of 7900gt ( plz correct me if i am wrong here)
So now i have to choose between a 7900gs or 7900gt.Now tell me how much is the performance difference between a 7900gt and 7900gs?? Is the extra 3k for a 7900gt worth it???? If so where can i get them(XFX 7900gt) and how many yrs. warranty does it provide???

you are correct there. The 7950GT is a slightly overclocked 7900GT with an additional 256MB RAM. In fact it seems it that it was intended to replace the 7900GT. Also the passive cooler is the main reason which made me completely discard the idea of purchasing a 7950GT.

Warranty is 3 years for XFX and Leadtek. To get an idea about the performance difference, see this link

Toms VGA Charts

Thx for the link lord. But do you think its worthwhile to spend extra 3k on a 7900gt??? I read somewhere that the 7900gt too has some issues. There were more than a few instances of these cards failing. Now ill that be a problem??...also what about the noise level ?? will it be too noisy??? Thx in advance!

The 7900GS is very much worth the money it sells for and in my own opinion even more value for money than a 7600GT selling at 9k. But 7900GT is still better than 7900GS especially at the higher resolutions where it becomes apparent. If you are on a very tight budget and want to save every last bit possible, then a 7900GS would be fine enough. If you are willing to spend a bit more for some extra performance, then 7900GT is worth it. It all depends on your choice, budget and needs. Both are very good value for the money they sell for.

Regarding the problems with 7900GT, there indeed seemed to be some problems, but most were with pre-overclocked cards. However its nothing to worry about as you also get 3 years warranty and no GPU is gonna stay usable for gamers that long.

The HSF used on both 7900GS and GT are similar and they are pretty small. so the fan should not make much audible noise.

Also avoid the pre-overclocked cards (XXX versions) and get a card with active cooling (Heatsink and fan).

^^ Those are decent prices but it's a BIG one. I was looking for XFX .
Also thx lord for your help. You helped me decide.

Will be buying a 7900gt...Can someone tell me where(in india) to get the XFX 7900gt non-overclocked version from ???

Now all i need is a mobo and i am good to go!!:D:D

Where do you live? The official distributor is Rashi Peripherals. But you can ask any of your local dealers, they will be able to get it for you. As for the mobo, I recommend that you stick with either the P965 or 975 series full ATX boards only.
