Guys , do advice on this.
I want to buy a basic android or a blackberry phone as wifi hotspot.
Even 2G tethering will do.
I have a choice : i am getting a blackberry 8520. Just needed suggestions , on how to do a wifi hotspot on it?
I dont want any mifi device.
And pretty intended towards the blackberry coz bored of using android's.
Just need help in wifi tethering of the BB.!

A friend of mine recently needed a device with wifi hotspot capability to use with her ipad2 wifi only model.
We settled on the HTC Explorer since she wasn't too keen on a mifi either. Neat little phone, great touch, works smooth, probably wouldn't need to use custom ROMs to use to its full potential. Maybe i'll have to root it to remove the bloatware some time down the line.
For your needs, i think a mifi would be the most cost effective solution since you're keen on getting the Curve 8520. Also, native wireless tethering would only be coming in BB OS 10, i think. Having used the 8520 myself, i'd say it's a good device if you're willing to overlook the absence of 3g, an app store that doesn't have as many apps as the others, an average camera etc. I was able to tether it to my laptop using service books (fancy term for 'Configuration/APN settings" in case you didn't know) i found on the net. Used to get around 20 KBps on the 2g Rs 98/2gb plan ( 2 years ago?).

Thanks for the detailed guide.
But the main question i had is how do i make BB a wireless hotspot for my ipad, lappie, etc???

OK . Upon further digging, it seems that OS 7.1 does support wifi hotspot. Unfortunately, the 8520's latest OS is version 5 point something,
You're out of luck on this one, as far as i can tell. So you might have to start checking some android phones if this feature is pretty important to you.

Thanks for the reply. I also read that 7.1 support hotspot. But its not available in bb 8520. Will have to check some android's.
