We all know that when it comes to processors, only 2 companies slug it out the best, AMD and Intel. What I don't understand is that what is IBM's role in chip making business? When both Sony and Microsoft needed processor for their consoles, they both went to IBM. :S When one looks at the chart of top 10 supercomputers, they are IBM's Bluegene thingys. Why is it so?

no clue mate...!! maybe IBM provides some kind of business management/growth solution for the companies... :)

May be it will help: IBM POWER - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also, IBM is one of those semi-conductor companies that work behind the curtains. It taught AMD a trick or two and Intel is generally wary of Blue Monster. and then of course, just like Fujitsu, Sun, Siemens and Toshiba etc, IBM too is part of most semi-conductor industry panels that push forward latest technology and ideas.
