Laptops A few questions about ReadyBoost in vista

I got a older laptop and its got 2.2ghz dual-core turion ml-64 in my office, the thing is it has only got dual-channel 512 mb of RAM and also uses ATI's Radon Xpress X200 graphic, which takes up to 128 mb of total ram, which leaves me now where if i want to run vista on it.

i was curious if for example i some how got vista onto it, can i plug in a 2gb memory card and have it work anywhere nearly as fast as 2 physical extra gigs of ram or will there be dramatic performance hits? cuz if i can use memory card then i won't have to get another 2x1 gig of Ram which cost like $400

And can anyone confirm that Xpress X200 can support Windows aero glass?

thanks,

Since u've got less than 512Mb of RAM I would advise against using Vista. ReadyBoost is a feature of speeding up the process of paging, by paging stuff on flash memory rather than slower HDD. Since u've got less RAM, Vista will still page very very often (to the 2GB flash), thus wasting a lot of CPU cycles.

Thus, u cant replace Physical RAM with Flash using ReadyBoost. But paging does get faster!

And can anyone confirm that Xpress X200 can support Windows aero glass?

Xpress 200 can run Aero Premium (includes glass transperancy, Flip3D and all effects of Vista)...

thanks, i probably will get a extra gig of ram and kick one stick out.

By the way, have anybody installed 32 bit Vista on a amd Turion Laptop?

I tried Vista (final 32 bit code from MSDN site, clean install)on a 1.8Ghz core duo laptop, 1gig of Ram, it has ATi x1600 and vista was as slow as RC2, if not slower,i don't know if is suppose to be so or i messed up some driver

Also, remember that Flash memory has a limited life based on the number of read-write cycles. Now, normal usage is unlikely to push this much, but using it as a paging store is going to easily punish your flash drive.

But with flash drives with lifetime warranties (5-10 Years) do you think its worth the try using USB drive for page file... Also can this be used in WinXP Pro???
