Guys,
My friend needs a new digital camera, he is ready to spend 10 to 15 k for it
The priorities are:
1. Good image quality
2. Simple to operate
3. Good warranty /service
4. if possible slim

Plz suggest what would be the perfect product

I may have been out of touch of the camera world for quite some time now - but tell me one thing, since when has Sony started to feature on the compact digicam wishlist??

I thought that Canon was king followed by Panasonic in a close second.

well canon is leader in sales ,but not necessarly in performance and image quality, the panasonic use leica and sony uses carl zeiss lens in most models which are usualy better then the canon lens.
sonys piont and shoot cameras ,prosumers cameras are more then a match to canons and pansonic cameras in terms of image quality.
in P & S cameras the sony W300 is even better then canon G10,same way in prosumers cameras sony H1,H2,H5,H50 series where neck and neck with canons S1is.S2is,S3is.sonys sensors are used by many manufactures like nikon, casio etc
lately panasonic models offer more VFM and comparable image quality, sometimes compared to the canon they give better image quality like FZ28 vs sx10is,Sx1is.
the main reason people don't buy sony is because of the use of their proprietary storage format called the memory stick.

The Canons are the best in image quality but very low on features.

The Panasonics are best in terms of features & options, but average in image quality.

The Sonys offer a reasonable combination of image quality & features, both neither being the best and neither being bad.

To summarise:

Image Quality: Canon > Sony > Panasonic

Features: Panasonic > Sony > Canon.

Its your choice which you choose.

Just my personal opinion. :)

??

Canon is low on features? Can you please elaborate? World over Canons and Panny are considered the best compacts there are.

The cheapest Canon offering a wide angle lens is currently the Canon Ixus 110 which costs Rs.19k and which has some weird looks. Panasonic provides wide angle on their models costing as low as Rs.11k.

The cheapest Canon offering widescreen (16:9) HD video recording is the Canon Ixus 100 for Rs.15k. This model again doesn't have a wide angle lens.

So if you are looking at the newer features such as wide angle lens and widescreen HD recording then you are out of luck with Canon.

As regards the Panasonics, they have excellent features at a very cheap price. But Panasonics are normally plagued by noise problems at even low ISOs.

You are right. I checked my neighbour's panasonic FS3 - the image quality was a bit low although it has Mega O.I.S. and other stuff but I am not satisfied because the pictures are a bit grainy when you look at the pictures at actual size. I guess it's justified too, they are offering too many features at low costs.
