A new Unreal Tournament is finally coming

That's right folks, a new UT game is in development.

It's been nearly a decade since the last Unreal Tournament. A decade.

But with Unreal Engine 4 coming down the pipeline, Epic has decided to brush off the Unreal Tournament license and build out a modern version of the classic twitch shooter, the studio announced today. The game is slated for PC, Mac, and Linux and will be free upon release. Not free-to-play, Epic is quick to specify, but no-strings-attached free.

"Work on the future of Unreal Tournament begins today, and we're happy to announce that we're going to do this together, with you," writes Epic.

The game is coming from a core group of veterans inside Epic, and development will take place in the open. Epic has set it up so all content for the game will be available on GitHub for other Unreal Engine 4 developers.

According to Epic's announcement, "The game will be true to its roots as a competitive FPS." What that means in 2014 is anyone's guess.

Also slated for the game: "We'll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists, and gamers can give away, buy, and sell mods and content." Like Steam Workshop, revenue will be split between Epic and the content creators. "That's how we plan to pay for the game," writes Epic.

"A lot of this is brand new for Epic, and we don't yet have everything figured out. Things will probably definitely go wrong from time to time," Epic continues. "But if you're a fan of Unreal Tournament, a UE4 developer, or a future modder—or if you just want to learn how we make games—we hope you'll join us."

I loved Unreal Tournament back in the late nineties, but it's been a while. I'm tentatively excited, but I won't get my hopes up until I see my first jump pad.

As our long wait begins, however, the classic Unreal Tournament games are slated to go on sale on Steam. Maybe I'll just go buy the original in the meantime.

Ah my first shooting game on a PC. How I used to love the original UT. Nostalgia. I bet it will be fun to play even today, esp with friends.

Flak cannon was always my weapon of choice in corridors.

And the sexy announcement voice:

Unreal Tournament was actually a spinoff from the original Unreal series. Check out this history of UT video.

CliffyB, Van den Bos & Brandon are superheroes!

DM-RetgrogradeSationAS, DM-Izengrad some of the maps I built for UT99 when I was a kid. Of course this was as part of the "Mod" Community before anybody interprets it otherwise. Both were Average maps, spent a lot of time on UnrealWiki and Nalicity to learn UnrealEd 3.0 or was it 2.0? Don't remember. & MP Tracker for UT99 music.

Good old school days - Unreal Tournament 99, Iron Maiden's Brave New World at the same time. Massive events.

Would love to see TE make a contribution to UT.

PS: Quixand was/is my screen name for UT. It all began there :)

You guys probably know this already but in case you missed it, Cliffy B left Epic a while back.
SOURCE

I've subscribed to the UE4 engine. Checked out the code on github and I've started tinkering with the samples. The subscription may sound bad but the new SDK is completely worth it IMO.

Subscription cost is $19/month but you can stop it at any point and still use the engine on your local system. Much more value than an MMO subscription I would say, and needless to say it's more productive.

The UnrealScript system has been completely replaced with a new system called blue print. You can do a lot with it without writing a single line of code. Programmers also will not be dissapointed as the blue print system directly generates native C++ code and you can technically make your whole game only through code.

Programmers and creative folks alike should definitely check it out.

Yes bro, I'm still a subscriber, but I haven't done much for a while though. Level editor is awesome.

You should go ahead and subscribe if your interested in playing around with it. Very active community and support is also great. Lot's of free content also to get you started.
