I have been noticing since past few weeks, a bunch of threads by a "smart" member created in the General Section have been locked by the mods. The reason was that they had content which brought about possibility of the said member being a troll and starting such threads just to garner attention.

Now from my understanding, the threads dealt with trivial topics which were not inflammatory, hate inducing or going against TE rules in any way. So it does seem like the mods were a bit harsh on that member. I have seen a number of "off-topic" threads that deal with similar of worse topics, get derailed, run dozens of pages long, yet aren't locked out.

That being said, I, in no way wish to imply that the mods are at fault. In fact, I applaud them for the great work they do so that everyone has the best experience on TE. I am also not supporting the member in question as he/she/it is creating such threads on a regular basis with the possible purpose of trolling. I am merely suggesting a better way to deal with such threads.

I think the best thing to do would be to ignore "troll" thread completely. In fact members, should bump other sensible thread so that the troll thread gets off page 1. By doing this, you are not only NOT feeding the troll, you are decreasing their appetite to come up with such threads.

Please not I am in no way related to that member or any of the mods. Everyone is welcome to post suggestions or provide feedback.

I think most of the threads were locked not because of the thread starter, but because the 'troll police' had taken the thread far off topic. Since nobody was really helping, it seemed logical to close the thread to avoid further insults.

Couldn't agree more!

In fact I see people spending all their time in Gen Talk/Market/other non-tech sections and then complaining about tech discussion getting diluted

The freedom offered by the GT Section is what makes all the members go OT and feed the Trolls... As long as GT is free of strict rules, I believe there is nothing much we can do about it. And by this I am not intending to say that rules be made stricter for GT.

And BTW, I believe that more than the Smart OP, it is the other members posting in OP's thread who are trolls. The OP makes a post and the trolling begins!

While I appreciate your views and suggestion that the members ignore the troll posts of the Smart member, what you are suggesting is akin to suggesting the boycott of a member and that is what bugs me a bit about the suggestion. I do not think that it is gonna help as it is not just the Smart OP who is at fault here. It takes 2 to tango... in this case, troll!!

@ OP: I see that you registered in Jan 2012. Believe me, the GT Section has seen far worse and survived in the past few years!

And BTW, even I am just about 2 years old here!

I'm guessing most of the other "troll" threads werent started by members with > 80% posts in the GT section

The name of the forum is techenclave after all

I dont think he was suggesting a boycott, but that members ignore it if it offends their views.

Yes but Gen Talk is for everything thats non-tech. If its tech related stuff, it should be in the tech sections not in GT.

#Neo-N I was lurking around for quite sometime before deciding to register.

GT is the life of TE. The discussions we've had in GT are plain legendary.

Anyone raises a finger at GT or the freedom there, including trolling, and there will be blood.

Peace, bro. \\//

I found troll police more annoying.

A simple report would have sufficed and wait for MOD action. Rather than bait more people who are suckered into a discussion about the existence of such threads.

I saw some people get banned for their over reaction about a troll. I don't quite remember where but it did send a strong message.
