I am having trouble with dns servers since yesterday. Net is on, but, some sites like firefox, cnet, don't load and timeout. Wasted 3 hours trying to figure out the problem, from ipconfig settings to modem.

I thought it might be a loose connection in phone line but even snr ratio is fine at 14 down and 18 up.

Reset modem, reset everything in lan adapter. In the end i saw this:

It seems isp dns servers override the adapter settings. And after testing the isp servers for speed, 1 of them the 218.248.241.4 one is unreliable - as in it does not reply to dns queries.

So even with 6 dns servers i'm facing a virtual slowdown issue. Torrent speeds was 0 - 5Kb, and suddenly they would be at 200Kbps. And after 5 mins they would fall down to 30-40Kbps, and then again 0. Same with http downloads - couldn't connect to firefox site to download the 3.6.9 update. Nor can i download anything. After 3am it seemed the modem would just connect and I couldn't even browse properly. Became pretty frustrating after a period of time.

I don't use open dns since, those servers have people putting settings of their own on them - like blocking sites or countries.

So any way to override atleast the second isp dns which might be causing trouble here. The first one seems quite fast according to this DNS benchmark tool.

Or is it any other problem?

Edit i tried with the DNS Advantage ip's too, but no difference in experience.

Use Google DNS servers, 8.8.8.8 as primary and 8.8.4.4 as secondary, open dns is also good but it does stop some apps sites from loading..

lol. guys see the quote in post 1 properly please. If you notice I have added google dns as primary and secondary plus 2 more additional dns servers in my adapter settings. but those are getting overridden by isp dns.

color coded the first post so it helps people understand that scenario i'm facing. i want to override those dns servers (atleast the secondary one) in windows through some means.

i think windows, first queries the primary, then the secondary if primary does not respond and then the list in the adapter settings, if the secondary does not respond. So my adapter primary is actually the 3rd in line dns server, not 1st that windows will query incase of dns failure.

Damn now I realised by DNS on my PC and DNS on my modem are diff....

Or am I wrong...

Modem shows completely diff DNS and PC shows goodle DNS

AFAIK , if your PC is set to manual DNS , then the routers DNS wont matter . But its better to change the routers DNS directly to google / open DNS or whatever you want to use since then you want have to individually configure it on different PC's

^^ Well if I change the DNS on my router to google the modem fails to even connect to Airtel network....

^ ofcourse it wont open. most probably the ip address you get from airtel is from their dns servers. think of it as a city wide lan network. you connect to the isp thru those isp settings in modem. so making any changes in those settings will result in no connection to the net.

and also since i'm connecting to the isp in bridged mode, there are no settings in my modem for configuring dns servers of isp.

open 192.168.1.1 in your ie browser enter the password, usually its admin and password but you can google the model number to find correct one. In the settings there would be an option to change the dns.
