Hi,
I have recently purchased an acer one netbook which comes with inbuilt wi-fi.

All these years I have been using a bsnl modem to connect to my pc through the lan port. What I am doing now is removing the lan cable from the back of my pc, and then plugging it into my netbook. And then again when I want access on my PC I unplug my lan cable from the netbook and put it back into the pc.

My modem is the cheapest one available with only one lan port and one usb port.

Question 1: Is there any way I can simultaneously the lan cable to have internet on my pc, as well as the USB cable to have internet access on my netbook at the same time?
Question 2: If I take the new bsnl wi-fi modem, will it allow me to connect to my pc through lan and simultaneously connect to my netbook through wi-fi.
Last time I tried to install the usb modem drivers I ended up with major pain. The usb driver installation failed on vista and xp.

Any help or advice will be appreciated.
Thanks,

Apply to BSNL - they will change your type I modem with a type II modem (wi-fi) for about 1.6K.

Or else you can buy one of the cheap wi-fi routers for around 1.3K (Belkin ones-they are good enough for basic purpose) and add it to your existing modem to get wi-fi enabled. In these way you can use net in your PC through the LAN connection and in your laptop through wi-fi.

No, you will have to submit the old one and will get the new wi-fi one at a monthly rental of Rs. 85 per month or 1.6K one time payment.

Yes to both of your questions.

Regarding your first query, you can use your modem in pppoe mode rather than bridge mode. You will be able to use internet on both machines simultaneously then. However making usb driver work is a pain.

And if you have modem on rental, then just ask the BSNL guys to upgrade your modem to wifi one and you will be able to use net on pc (via lan) and netbook (via wifi).

Another option would be to invest in a good router like Asus 520gU or cheaper one like Belkin (if you dont want to invest much) and connect it to your existing modem.

Configure your Modem as per given tutorial here

wa 1003a (India Broadband Wiki)

use your modem in PPPoE mode...

Now, Enabling Local Area Connection will let you surf on your PC and laptop both ;)

I use same method..

Alternative -

Let the modem be in bridge mode.. Use dialer to connect to Internet.. But only one device will able to use Internet at one time i.e. PC or a Laptop as Normal Dataone plans do no support MU (Multiuser connectivity)

^^ How can he use bridged mode with a router and access that with a laptop (PC is off)? IMO that is not possible. PPPOE is the only solution here.

usb is unsuitable for broadband ... ask bsnl abt the wi-fi model they are giving .....take it only if they are giving the seimens one ...otherwise buy from market

HI,
Thanks for the replies thus far.
The problem is that I just haven't been able to get the usb drivers to install. I removed the lan cable, and only put in the usb cable. I started the usb driver installation and plugged in the usb cable when prompted. But at the end it always fails. I haven't been able to install the modem drivers on xp, vista and even win7. I downloaded the drivers from the calcuta bsnl website, I went to my friends house and got his bsnl CD. But nothing works.

I think the wi-fi is the best option for me. I had totally forgotten about it.
So just to summarize, the unlimited wi-fi plan is Rs.1500/- a month and using this plan I can use the lan cable to connect to my PC, and the wi-fi to connect to my netbook. And both my pc and my netbook can be online 24/7?
Incidently, are there updated drivers on the net for my modem model, SmartAX MT882 HUAWEI.

Thanks very much for discussing.

I have huawei wa1003a. USB drivers work fine on xp. They also work on vista and windows 7 but only x86 editions (don't work on x64 editions). And USB mode is as fast as ethernet mode for my 256k unlimited conection. Currently I am using one desktop via ethernet, one desktop via usb, two laptops, one e65, one N95, One Gsmart GSM phone and one Reliance cdma with wifi, so overall 8 connections without any problems.
