I guess by now, there are qute a few OS X users on the forum...some full time, some part time (osx86/hackintosh) but the fact remains that a good number of users on TE are now using os x

Safin would of course know better,...one look at the site stats is all it'll take

And of course, there are good number that have been thinking of switching to the dark side

Now coming back to where I was, If have any OS X related question, or a tip to share and I create a thread in the other subforums, it gets lost within no time..

( Last evening, I wanted to share a neat tip about saving FLV vids from youtube/metacafe on safari without any third party plug-ins, but didn't do so coz i'd get buried real soon)

The Open source sub-forum, despite being a relatively less active area has a treasure-trove of info that focuses on Linux.. and with the limited search support on php-bb (or whatever forum s/w we us), it's very difficult to dig info with multiple search terms/ three letter acronyms when needed

and OS X related stuff is the only reason why I sometimes need to step over to the Digit forums (They don't have a subforum but a very active single thread running on OS X- IMO a strange and weird way to handle it)

+1. A lot of people are switching over, and a dedicated sub forum will make it easier for everyone to keep track of osx and mac related info

the solution would be to start a windows subforum. The reason mac threads get buried is that there arent enough posts or the interest generated its trumped by the windows ones. Im making the assumption that you implied windows since you already ruled out linux to the open source section. A subsection to Windows would be warranted due to high post frequency, leaving the Operating system base forum open to OSX and generalized OS posts.

i can still count the mac owners here with my 2 hands alone. Even though I am OSX user myself, I still dont think there are enough people or even any discussion going on about it. Lets see how many OSX users reply here.

if you bothered with counting.. your crowd would number less than 20..

That's self defeating thinking

How many Linux users for that matter...

Also, with the growing interest in OS X and Apple hardware (and obviously the number of related searches that happen from within India), you are only going to attract more new users

Id agree with SCZ here

a dedicated mac forum would definitely help only issue being not much people at the moment that will keep the section alive, but then again, there was very little interest in photography as well and look where it is right now

i guess the reason we dont see many mac users on TE is because we dont have any content on the same, once we keep adding up and make it more easy to browse through it'll pick up

anyway we'll have a discussion about it and see what comes out of it

+1

I am curious abt OS X but haven't switched so far. If there's a dedicated subforum it would definitely lure me (and many other fence sitters) to switch sooner. With the kind of serious contributors we have at TE,OS x curious ppl will see quality content on a regular basis and eventually it would not just help them take the plunge but also give them the knowledge to help others around them.

Another OSX user here, even though on an experimental basis on my hackintosh.. An OSX sub forum would definitely be more useful here.

A plcae like Thinkdigit has a 267 page long running thread on OS X

(and having a single thread to handle an entire OS/harware category is ridiculous)

There is no reason why this category wouldn't be athriving one at TE

Of course, no one would expect it to be as hot as P2P or Market, but it wouldn't be too bad compared to an Apps or Open source category

IMHO the issue here is that a dedicated sub-section for OS X with only a few threads would look a little out of place - putting aside the possible hits, etc.

In the past, newer forums/sub-forums have been started whenever there have been excess threads on a particular topic such that it merits its own corner, right? (for eg., the Audio zone section.)

That way if you feel Windows is over-shadowing the OS section, what Grease Monk said makes a bit more sense to start a dedicated Windows sub-forum instead and shift all those threads there.

P.s: There are certain 3 letter words that have been allowed in search (AMD, CPU, etc). Perhaps we can get the admins to add OS X to the list :)

Macbook gets 150 thread hits (not posts)

Leopard brings 96

Tiger 150 (though of course some would refer to Sourav Tiger Da )

Can't search for OS X so dunno how many would that bring up

:P

Ubuntu on the other hand brings up 150 (is that the cap?)

Linux 150 too (OK, that's the search cap on max results i guess)

So let's try google TE search

Macbook - 462

Ubuntu - 532

Leopard - 266

Weirdly enough, Vista yields only 330

true, but it still points to a strong interest in OS X in the community

Although I was surprised at the low number of results for Vista

Am sure that as far as sheer numbers go, the interest in Vista is higher than OS X
