I may have to take my laptop to service center this Saturday. I am very much worried about the guys over there swapping parts with old ones. Before going there, I want to make a list of all the details of my hardware such as RAM, harddisk, battery etc. so that after servicing I can make sure that no unnecessary replacements occured. What all things should I be taking note off? I know that I can take note of the battery serial number. Similarly, is there any identification number of RAM, HDD, or any other part of the laptop?

Also, is there any other precaution I should take? I won't leave any personal data in it.

1. Data Backup - You have this covered.

2. Mobo S/N - Find out using any tool in windows/ Read in BIOS

3. Battery S/N - Printed

4. RAM Modules nos. - Printed

5. HDD S/N - Printed

6. Note all the dents and scratched and document them.

Relax, so far have not come across an instance when such a thing has happened in Laptop service, car service maybe, but never laptop.

Thanks axeman. I am very paranoid about taking any of my gadgets to service centers. This is because of the issues I faced with my SE K810i mobile. I bought this mobile for 17000 Rs. about 1.8 years back. When I tried to play an mp3 through its speaker, it sounded very bad. This was after 5 days of purchase (I couldn't get any mp3 before that). When I went to the shop from where I bought it, they asked me to take it to service center. Service center guys told me that the mother board needs to be replaced. I said OK and got it replaced. Then sometime later, I realised that the phone is not retaining the 'data account settings' after switching off and on. I took it to service center, but they refused to repair it since there was a small crack on its body (I dropped it once). Once the warranty period was over, I opened the phone and found out that the speaker is separate from the motherboard. I don't know why then they wanted to replace the motherboard. I also faced 6-7 other issues with this phone.

Get Every component signed by the shop

I guess if I try to do that, they will refuse to service my laptop. :D
