About UHARC Ultra Compressor

Hey guys, I m trying for the last few days to use the most respected and most powerful compressor available the UHARC(originally a DOS based compressor) but unable to make it work. There are many versions available and I am not very comfortable in the DOS varient. However the CMD version the UHARC.CMD 2.1 integrates itself with windows and after installation while right clicking on any folder or file an option comes as "COMPRESS WITH UHARC" and if we click that option then the compression process starts and after finishing that we can convirt it to an SFX archive. But in my case when I click on the "compress with uharc" option nothing happens. The DOS screen just flashes for a second and thats about it.:( I m unable to find the cause for this error.so if any of you guys know about this error plese help..........
P.S-I need to compress all the 7-8GB games to a 1-2GB archive with this.so plese help me on this one if you can

Though i too use uharc, but i doubt that it will compress 7-8gb to 1-2gb.

And about ur problem, the gui utility will do the job. Before that uninstall ur previous utility and run a registry cleaner.

I doesnt support file size more the 2 gig, better create multiple parts of 2 gig and compress those individually

Well I was just giving a prospective to look at.its not like i strictly want to have it 1-2GB final but a 8-9GGB file should compress itself to be written in a 4.7GB DVD.thats my aim.Well if you use it which version do you use?? The GUI version doesn't give the SFX archive making facility and the CMD version is not working neither in my home(WIN 7 Ultimate 64Bt) or in my office(Win XP X86).I like the CMD version (cos it gives the SFX making ability) but unable to make it to work.

7z is faster in compressing and better compared to UARC format. ARC format is too old and not actively developed anymore
Well I have tried 7z but found it to be disappointing as it didn't compress a lot.I need to compress a archive to half of its actual size which UHARC does as it actually compresses even the sounds and videos in a game and thats the magic of it.I have seen its power, I just need to get it to work..............

Lol, you think these RIPs and repacks that are made, they are just the full game packed with UHARC??

Well mate, hate to point out, but thats not how it works. It's all about formats, encoding, recoding, better compression rate for some formats, smaller size formats.

The formats here are for videos and sounds(which are a major chunk of games, like 21GB out of 42GB in Killzone 3 is movies). They pack the dll for recoding the sound files(usually encoded as ogg) and videos are brought down to lower bitrate, lesser resolution and fps.

Thats what really makes a game smaller. If you just take an iso and use UHARC for like 3-4 hours for compression, you'll get the SAME RESULT, perhaps 10-20MB larger within a few minutes using the "FASTEST" mode of 7zip.

+1 to what comp@ddict said.

If the 8-9 GB data is already compressed which usually is, then you will not be able to compress it further.

If you have the time to try out newer compression techniques, try this

PeaZip - Free file and archive manager - 7Z TAR RAR ZIP...

a few benchmarks of the various algorithms supported by peazip.

Multiple file lossless compression benchmark, sorted on compression ratio

PeaZip - Benchmarks

Actually I generally unpack a game and then try to experiment with new compressors, so if m saying that it is 8-9GB then it is after extraction. But thanks for the links.I will definately check them out my friend.......................

Thats a good reply buddy but I m not looking to compress with modified and downgraded video and audio.i m looking for a honest compressing tool............i mean which does not downgrade the visuals and audio to get better compression.i m aware of that......thats why i m looking for a compressor which can do it without doing those things. My main aim is to accommodate a DVD9 game in to a 4.7GB DVD(cos my HDDs are going to explode if I dont get this done).thats all................
