By how much?

The cant price the Alto 800 at 4.xx lakhs.

It'll be a 15K hike in price.

With airbags being compulsory, I guess manufacturers will have to import them in volumes and many be even make locally. So price hike should not be much. Bu this was required. Hope this is actually implemented.

I remember someone sharing some article in a discussion thread where Toyota's engineer had said that Airbags only cost around 15-20k to manufacture and install the first time around.

ABS & Airbags used to push prices up had more to do with companies trying to sickeningly use them as a "premium" feature set for their higher variants than actually making them basic specs right from the mose base variant. The Auto Industry in India has got away for decades with having their way in adoption and thereby defacto "standardisation" of specs/features per price-band.

Frankly, once it becomes Govt enforced for every vehicle, the economics of scale will actually bring costs of these equipment down & the incremental spend for companies per unit of ABS/Airbag equipment will hardly be anything. However they are likely to hike prices up "citing" increased manufacturing costs incurred due to such "features" being made mandatory.

It's high time the Govt. put them on the mat rather than letting them do the "voluntary" right thing.

As if people today drive safe knowing their car doesn't have safety features. The maruti guy was the person who told that their cars comply with Indian regulations in terms of safety.
What Indian regulations do we even have ?

As if people today drive safe knowing their car doesn't have safety features.
what he meant that, making basic safety features mandatory will increase the prices and a two-wheeler guy may never graduate to a four-wheeler. two-wheeler guys see more accidents and it may increase further.

actually, many people drive carefully knowing that their vehicle isn't reliable.

^^ He is safeguarding Maruti's interest. He is worried that Maruti vehicles may not sell better in future, owing to increase in manufacturing costs. :D

I really wish that airbags were made mandatory as of yesterday. Logically, ABS should be given priority as it may prevent an accident in the first place. But India has too much population and people are going to bang into each other regardless of having ABS or not. Airbags can atleast save few lives after the crash.

Automobile manufacturers will have to put their act together in order to reduce car crashes and fatal deaths on Indian roads. The Government on Tuesday said that all cars- from economy to luxury-will have to prescribe to the minimum safety standards. Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said that the Government will set a two-year deadline for all cars makers to include the mandatory safety features in the vehicles.

“All cars from economy to luxury should have the mandatory safety features like front and rear seat belts, dual airbags, anti-lock braking system and child restraint,” said Gadkari. “We will also have a unified driving licensing system as well as automated driving licence tests. This will help us have all the data of the driver, including his driving history online and in one place. So incase, of any incident, we will have access to his antecedents,” he said.
