Hi all,

Am having a LAN with peer-to-peer network and have Windows98, windows2000 and windowsXP Operating systems. Am using 192.168.100.0 series IP and my workgroup name is domain.
The problem got from the last week, problem is when i goes to browse the network through the explorer "my network places" or "computers near me" in Xp and 2000 or "network neighbourhood" in 98 then the pc shows all the computers those are connected to that network but if i double clicks on a computer name then the system says
\\computer name is not accesable, Access is denied
eg: \\backup is not accesable
Access is denied
This is only when i try to access some of windows 2000 pc and Xp not in 98. All the windows 98 PC's are accesable from all 2000 and Xp pc. and from 98 pc also not getting some of 2000 and Xp pc but some of are accesable.
when i goes to run and if i gave the command "\\computer name" then also it says Access denied ,
eg: \\backup,
error message is
\\backup is not accesable
Access is denied
and if i gave the direct path of the shared folder then it comes !.
eg: "\\backup\inbox" ,( if i shared inbox in backup pc). then we wil get the inbox folder from the backup pc. it happends in all 2000 and Xp pc.
I have tried with some antivirus if there is any virus in those computers but it cannot fixed. i used Norton, mcafee, AVG and e-scan and with some anti-spyware.
I also i changed the network card , ip address of those computer, computer name, but no use. And also updated the OS through the internet.

Am requesting to you all to give me a solution from your side as soon as possible.

Well connectivity between the XP and 98 has always been a problem... Try logging on to the 98 machine with the same username and password by which you log on to your XP machine and then try connecting... Try disableing the firewall also for the time being... Hope this helps...

U can't log on to a workgroup with win98, so there is no way to access a Win2000/XP/NT based setup... perhaps there is software that allows u to do that. U see, there is no authentication on win98 and u need to be able to authenticate urself to get on to NT.

Hey guys,

The problem is with 2000 and XP machines. I guess you all misunderstood. So, I will try again to explain.

When I try to connect to other XP/2000 machine from my XP machine on peer-to-peer network, either by clicking on the machine name under network neighbourhood or by specifying the \\MachineName in the address bar. I get the message as access denied.

But, if I sepecify the shared folder name along with the machine name (\\MachineName\SharedFolderName) then I am able to connect to the machine and can access that specific folder.

It seems that some settings on few of these machines have been changed thats why they are not accessible directly by machine name, but needs the shared folder name also.

To check the same, I reinstalled the OS on one of the 2000 machine and the problem was sorted.

I even tried to repair the network configuration on other machines but in vein. I have double checked that no two machines have the same name or same ip address. Also, all the machines should have same workgroup name.

Any solution guys except reinstallation of OS?

Regards

try this:

- Instead of \\Machinename, do \\192.168.100.x (the actual IP of the machine you want to access)
- If this works, this probably means the "hosts" file in your windows directory is incorrect /corrupt (Happens all too often)

- Go to your windows folder, open file called "hosts" in notepad and edit it:

Comp1<Tab>192.168.100.m
Comp2<Tab>192.168.100.n

and so on....(the hosts file is used by windows to do a name- IP mapping for internal network names/URL's that can't be resolved using DNS servers)
Since teh hosts file takes precedence over DNS server baseed mapping, the hosts file is a quite common target for malware/spywar etc.

Try, and post back if this works

It did not work buddy. I tried to ping the IP and I am getting the response. But in this case I'm getting the same old message as follows:

"\\192.168.100.41 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied."

But if give \\192.168.100.41\SharedFolderName, it is working for that specific folder.

In the hosts file under c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc, I have only one IP address. i.e.

127.0.0.1 localhost

Few machines are accessible but few are not. :S

Firstly disable all firewalls if any enabled including the windows firewall.
Secondly from what I get for it happens to be a case of Permissions. But accessing the computer giving you access denied is what baffles me.
You could try creating a user with the same username & passwords in all the computers that have 2k/XP & then try logging in into each with that same username/passwords.i.e user with the same credentials for logging into each computer.
Though I doubt it will work, you may give it a try anyways.

No firewalls are there. Its not the case of permission though the error message is about permissions. Reason, if there are two folders on share, I can access both the folders but by specifying the shared folder name. So, in other words I can not access that machine unless I know the shared folder name. I can not see what other folders are on share. But can access each of them if I know the folder name.

Another thing what I think is the exercise of creating the user will be futile bcoz. other XP/2000 machines are working fine. Also, these machines were fine too earlier.

Is there any kind of service that is disabled?

Regards.

Really a weird problem.... :-(
Can't really think of anything.....
Try this, this is a far shot but anyway,,,,...
Share a new folder (currently unshared) on the XP machine that is giving you trouble.(right clickon the folder >sharing and security)...( A faint chance) you may get a warnign to run the netyworking wizard.....enable sharing on that folder and try again......

Else, manually browse through all the services and try to check if any required service is disabled....(Contro Panel>Adm tools>Services)..painstaking process for sure, but you may just stumble upon the cause

Tell what filesystem are you using, FAT32 or NTFS? If you have disabled Simple File sharing then there is additional "Folder sharing permissions over the network" which control network access for selected users depending on the permission assigned. check if there is any such share to which u do not have access.

You may use this command to check all the shared folders on the machine to which u get Access denied

net share <sharename>

eg if shared folder is test then

net share test

Post the output

Regards.

we are using FAT32 file system. File and Print sharing is Enabled . Using TCP/IP, NetBIOS enabled over TCP/IP.
Checked with Net Share and here under is the output:
