Actress Ranya Rao, 33 gold smuggling case: Actress admits to strapping 14 gold bars to thighs to evade airport detection!
Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials, acting on prior intelligence, intercepted Ranya Rao, 33 upon her arrival from Dubai on an Emirates flight on March, 3rd.
Preliminary findings indicate the gold was allegedly purchased for a prominent politician, prompting officials to trace payment routes.
Ranya Rao travelled to Dubai for 27 times this past 6 months and travelled to 45 countries for the past several years. Sometimes her husband Jatin Hukkeri also accompanied her during her trips to Middle East, Europe & US.
Ranya Rao is the step daughter of Ramachandra Rao IPS, DGP of Karnataka. Ramachandra Rao is saying that she isn't staying with them anymore but staying with her husband.
14 gold bars weighing 14.8 kgs worth 12.86 crores are seized by DRI at Kempegowda International Airport, so following Ranya’s arrest, the DRI searched her Lavelle Road residence, where she lives with her husband, and seized ₹2.67 crore in cash and gold jewelry worth ₹2.06 crore. With the total seizure amounting to ₹17.29 crore, investigators are closely examining her frequent foreign trips and possible links to international smuggling networks.
The gold smuggling case involving Kannada actor Ranya Rao has now put her husband, architect Jatin Hukkeri, under scrutiny. Authorities are investigating whether Hukkeri had any role in facilitating the smuggling operation, given his multiple trips to Dubai with Rao. Hukkeri, known for his high-end architectural projects in Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai, married Ranya Rao in a grand ceremony a few months ago. With suspicions mounting, investigators are probing his financial links and potential involvement in the case.
The actress has been remanded to judicial custody until March 18, while the DRI has sought three more days of interrogation starting March 9 to uncover further details.
Despite her arrest, Rao assured full cooperation with authorities, stating her testimony was given voluntarily.
Reports suggest the actor has confessed during interrogation, with revelations about her frequent international trips adding new twists to the investigation.

I think this gold smuggling ring is being run in almost all international airports in India.
Biggest bust by DRI was done in February, 2019.
Hyderabad-based Zia Unnisa smuggled 350 kg gold from Dubai since February 2019.
Unnisa was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) on Tuesday.
It is learnt that Zia Unnisa, a city-based woman who is reportedly a practising advocate in the UK, has smuggled around 350 kg of gold from Dubai to Hyderabad since February 2019 worth 1200 crores. During this period she travelled to Dubai more than 30 times and has smuggled around 11 kg of gold each time, found the DRI officials.
Her travel records indicated that she had travelled to Dubai every fourth day. It is learnt that she made seven trips to Dubai during the month of May alone. Investigation revealed that she herself worked as an operator-cum-carrier and was also indulged in selling the smuggled gold to five jewellers in Hyderabad.
Concerned about the modus operandi of suspects who successfully smuggled out 267 kg of gold, worth ₹167 crore, from the Chennai International Airport here, until July, 2024 the Tamil Nadu Police will seek a report from the Customs on the crime syndicate and its network. This report was in July, 2024.
Again in Nov,2024 around 20 kg gold items were confiscated from 25 flyers from Singapore upon arrival in Chennai International Airport worth 15 crores and found after thorough frisking by the officials of the Central Revenue Intelligence Department.

Is it so easy to bring or smuggle gold from Middle East and sell it here to prominent jewellers in the city?
