Adding text to images

I have clicked a lot of images using a digital camera.

Since the pictures are of my visits to different places in India, I want to tell the viewer of the image where exactly the picture was taken. As I wont remember the names of all the places a few years down the line.

Is there any software other than MS Paint which allows me to emboss text in images?

I know that there are a lot of such programs but I want something which is really light on resources as my PC has only 256MB of RAM(I had two RAM sticks, but one of them stopped working very recently and I will be getting my laptop after 1 month).

Also, is there any extension to IrfanView which lets me optimise images for the net and can do so in batches. I have almost 600 images to convert.

You can only batch 'rename' the files with the date/time it was taken and a common description following.

For eg:

DSC00121 , DSC00122

TO

2009/11/23 10:43 Picnic , 2009/11/24 06:00 Picnic

Afaik, it's not possible to 'batch' emboss text in images.

It has to be done manually, one after the other. :(

You did not understand my question. Perhaps I could not make myself clear.

I do not want to batch emboss text.
I will add text to images manually to each image separately.

I just want to optimise the images for the internet by a batch process. It is very tedious to optimise each image for the internet separately.
By saying optimise for the internet, I mean I want to reduce the file size of the images by lowering the resolution and reducing the quality a bit.
Want to upload some of the images to some online galleries like tinypic or facebook or Orkut or Picasa.

If you have the GIMP, there's a batch resizer plugin you can use. Also, if you use a linux distribution, you can install the nautilus-image-convert packages (which use ImageMagick) and just right click and resize.

However, you should've searched for exactly what you mentioned on Google because you get results instantly. As a matter of fact, it appears that IrfanView has in-built batch processing that allows you to resize images.

Good luck.

There is a windows Power Toy that can easily resize images. Once you install it, you can just select the images you want, right click and select resize option.

I knew that I would get a lot of results if I searched on Google. But as my resources are pretty low at the moment(only 256MB RAM), I wanted to know if someone has already used such a program and can confirm that it is light on resources.

As I have not installed IrfanView yet, I did not know that it has a batch resizer inbuilt.

Quite alright.

Try this for batch resizing : http://www.jklnsoft.com/

You could also give GIMP a try.

Irfanview can do the job perfectly.

Go to File> Batch Conversion/Rename

A popup box opens, there you can select as many files you need from a particular directory and add as Input files.

The Work as section allows you to

-batch convert or

-batch rename or

-both

Then there is the Advanced options (below Output format selection), in which you can select the resize/crop options as per you requirements.

I don't know whether plugins are needed for this as I have them installed already.

It's possible to add batch watermarks/text based on your custom text/EXIF data. There are lots of free softies available.

Forgot the names though. Search and you'll find.
