Hi all,

I need a specific advice on getting a laptop from UK. Actually my friend needs a laptop and macs are cheaper here due to current conversion rates and the student discount available to me.

now the question is I already have my laptop which i will be bringing with me. Will the customs create any issue if i will be carrying two laptops. Though they will be different brands and one is definitely used and old :P

Please suggest what to do...

the old one will not attract any custom duties...for the new one...buy it...use it and make it look like an old one :P

any source for this info. (website/ personal experience/ know some one in customs)

What if i discard the packing etc and get it in a laptop bag. will that do??

i have had a friend carry 2 laptops in and out of the country.....provided u get 1 to be "company property" , "college property" etc etc....and the other can be personal ....:P on a lighter note, if u are not flying alone and have someone known to you coming along....u can always request them to *do* the needful....now thats provided u have friends / relatives / someone known along.....don't just try it with anyone PLEASE...that would get u in trouble.

other option, leave it there for someone coming later to bring it....

Edit : This might help as well.....http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=can+i+carry+two+laptops+to+india

initial sources from google say :

If you are 18+ years and has stayed more then 3 days overseas...then you are allowed 1 Laptop (Notebook) per Passenger

Technically, you are allowed only one laptop duty free. Does not matter whether it is new or old. If more than one is carried, then theoretically, your friend will have to pay a duty of 50%, on the cost of the laptop less the standard exemption limit of Rs. 25000.

Thanks for the link thetechmind

I searched onto the customs site and it says CLEARANCE OF INCOMING PASSENGERS

3. One laptop computer (notebook computer) over and above the said free allowances mentioned above is also allowed duty free if imported by any passenger of the age of 18 years and above. (What happens if one is bought from India, then I can import one )

I have another friend who already has a laptop with him (everyone has one now :P)

Now the thing is that I am giving one of my old faulty laptop to him and will buy one for my friend. So in total we will have 4 laptops with two people. I guess getting it marked as company or college property will do the trick. Thanks for the insight.

Anyone with a personal experience carrying two or more laptops from abroad please enlighten. :)
