I have a friend in New Zealand and has a laptop 1 too many. So I have asked him to send the excess to me. The laptop in the new unibody macbook.
Now the question is :

1) Does anybody has any idea how should he courier it to me
( I mean courier company, papers, cost etc. )

(I'v checked out fedex site - they are charging some 140$ NZ for a 10kg box - is it ok??)

2) Would I have to pay custom ??
( Laptop is new like but i have not purchased it, it's just a gift - and would it attract attention of customs )

Any advice in any area is most welcome...:)

and pardon me if I have started this thread in wrong section. MODS can redirect me or move it to appropriate section...

Yo will have to pay the customs , Octarai ( if applicable on the value )

Tell you friend to declare the laptop the refurbished Laptop so that he can declare the value less so less customs , octarai as well

Thanks for your reply... btw can u give me any idea on the custom duty that'll apply ( I live in NOIDA, UP , so no octroi).

What if he declares it as refurbished laptop with value say 200-300$ ??
What if he declares it as a gift ??

You can freely import any item under 10K rupees as a gift (including postage). However, if it exceeds that amount, you will be charged customs duty+other fees. It would definitely amount to a lot.

Also, the customs guys are not fools. They know the value of things, if its undervalued, they will likely hold it and make you pay a fine, and you'll have to grease palms to get it out of their clutches.

I suggest you ask your friend to bring it to India on their trip or send it with someone as there is no duty when a laptop is carried with a person as part of their baggage.
