Hi,

My existing RIG IS 7 YEARS OLD & PERFORMING VERY, VERY SLOW, I cannot multi-task. I am 47 years of age and my daughter is 10. The wifie also uses the comp - so my new rig is purely for home use. My profession is into 3D Stereoscopy; 2D/3D CGI.

Things that I have
LG - 47" LE4600 LED TV
Sherwood BDP 5004 Blu-Ray Player
WD HDTV Live Hub Media Player with 1TB
WD 1 TB My Passport USB 3.0
Nikon D5000 DSLR with 18-55mm & 55-300mm lens

Q: What is your budget?
Approx 30K to max 40K

Q: What is your existing hardware configuration (component name - component brand and model)
CPU - AMD Athlon XP 1800 1.24GHz
Motherboard - Asus A7NX
GPU - NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200
RAM - 1 GB SD RAM
Monitor - Samsung CRT Syncmaster 753DF(T)
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Platinum
Pinnacle TV Tuner Card
HDD - 120 + 200 GB Seagate
Speaker's : Creative 4.1 Inspire
Q: Which hardware will you be keeping (component name - component brand and model)
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Platinum
Speaker's : Creative 4.1 Inspire

Q: Which hardware component are you looking to buy (component name) ?
- Completely New Cabinet & Components
- Motherboard with Onboard Graphics preferable to start with & 1-2 HDMI outputs; USB 3.0
- HDD 1 + 1 TB
- RAM 6 GB
- SMPS Not sure brand/power requirements
Note: Is the AMD Phenom II X4 Model No 905e or 910e processor available. I have heard that it's "Energy Efficient"?

Q: Is this going to be your final configuration or you would be adding/upgrading a component in near future. If yes then please mention when and which component
Yes, will upgrade the following within 6 months
- Graphics Card - if needed
- HDD 1.5 or 2 TB & more if needed
- Blu-Ray Drive [read/write]
- More RAM if needed

Q: Where will you buy this hardware?
Mumbai - preferably from Andheri
Q: Would you consider buying a second hand hardware from the TE market
NO

Q: What is your intended use for this PC/hardware
I am not into Gaming.
Looking to build a decent CPU for occassional Video Editing/processing [720p/Full HD] home purpose [note: this is not an important thing]; Blu-ray ripping; Batch Processing of RAW images. Weekend's 24x7 downloads.
I am a passionate about downloading ONLY Full HD 1080p Movies.
MY new rig should be stable and last for at least 4-5 years.
Will be installing Image Editing & Sound & Video processing [compositing/editing] softwares.

Q: Do you have any brand preference or dislike? Please name them and the reason for your preference/dislike.
Not sure about AMD or Intel - prefer AMD as it seems more affordable

Q: Are you looking to overclock?
NO

Q: Which operating system do you intend to use with this configuration?
Windows 7 64 bit

Thanks to all you guys out here who are really doing yeoman service. Open to all suggestions

Processor : i5 - 2400 - Rs 9300
Motherboard : Intel - DH67VR - Rs 4100
RAM : Corsair Value Select 4GB - Rs 1250
Graphics Card : Radeon HD 6770 - Rs 7000
HDD OS : Seagate 1TB - Rs 2700
HDD Data : Seagate 2TB - Rs 4000
Cabinet : NZXT Gamma - Rs 2100
PSU : Corsair CX500 - Rs 3100

Total Cost Rs 33550
(Most prices taken from deltapage.com and theitdepot.com)

Reasons for this config:
1. you asked for efficiency.
2. The fact that you wont overclock.
3. Your use of 3D Stereoscopy, 2D/3D CGI and Blu Ray ripping (Radeon HD6770 has inbuilt 3D blue ray decode support, yet is power efficient)

Thanks @prajith .... I will look into the Intel config that you suggested [although I am a die-hard AMD fan]. Incidently you confused my work profile with my "home PC requirements" - NO, I AM NO LOOKING INTO DUPLICATING THE HIGH END WORKSTATIONS AT MY WORKPLACE AT HOME and will not be doing any 3D stereo work at home.

My Budget remains between 30-40K inclusive of the Monitor.

CAN SOMEONE ALSO HELP ME DECIDE WHETHER A "DUAL-CORE" proc is sufficient rather than a "QUAD CORE" ... I am open to reduce the final cost price and bring everything down to 35K.

I will not be using Maya or any similar software where all the "cores" are optimally utilised. And I am still clueless about 4 or 6 core utilisation.

@moksh4u2 - Errrrrr the link that you provided only deal's with HDD's -
Large Stock of New, OEM, NOS and Refurbished Drives
Largest Selection of "Hard to Find" Drives
Data Recovery and Certified Repairs

- This does not serve my purpose.

Incidently I am willing to get my stuff also from Lamington Rd.

regards
Terry

alpha nice config but for home pc use and strictly no professional use as op said,

why go for i7?

I think its overkill for op needs.

OP will be happy even on core i3 and he being amd fan even current apu's will fullfill.

2) again windows 7 professional is overkill for home pc.

Your reply lies in OP's query itself --

The Intel quad-cores will serve him in good stead for many years to come, plus as OP is not gaming even Intel's HD graphics will be good enough. Also, the Windows 7 Professional is for the purpose of RAM for future as Windows 7 Home Premium has a physical address limit on RAM of 16GB.

Dell Ultrasharp U2311H has a response time of 8ms whereas most TN panels have response time of 5ms. So is the difference perceptible from gaming point of view?

the newer IPS use a technology called response time compensation to offer faster response times comparable to TN panels. when in use the difference is smaller than earlier but may still cause certain problems in very rapid game sequences. For gaming purposes TN is king.. IPS is getting there, but not there yet..

Thanks so much for all your inputs esp @Alpha17. Meanwhile I have decided to wait until BD is released and see how it's priced/performance. Will surely get back and need ur help then.
