my bro is dubai is tired of his lappy and wants to change.

i suggest him a mac for a change after looking all the fights here:S

can u guys suggestwhich one he should start with??

and also the learning curve, he's very proficient with PC.

i'll send this link to him, so pls avoid flames :)

^ Not so soon.. major product refresh due in Q3 2010.. minor upgrades might occur in Q1 2010 along with the Tablet.

depends in 13 inch category

the macbook pro is actually lower in config (the hard disk) but more costly just for the backlit keboard and the aluminum body

whereas the new macbook has a bigger hard disk and now has also got the LED backlit screen and is cheaper

only thing missing in the macbook is the backlit keboard and the aluminum body

rest the config is exactly same

hence if you dont care much about the keyboard and the aluminum i suggest you get the latest version of the macbook, its the cheapest at this point

And no major upgrade is seen in the near future only the tablet will be launched

As for the learning curve its pretty small, once he'll use mac i bet he wont return to windows, mac is pretty easy to use, simple and neat.

Im not a mac fanboy i use both windows and mac and am speaking with experience

The 13" MacBook Pro model definitely has some edge over the polycarbonate unibody MacBook. The key differences such as aluminum unibody, firewire800, SD card slot, backlit keyboard, higher gamut LED display, the IR receiver, greater upgradability and overall aesthetics, etc make it worth the price tag. The slightly less HD space in the pro model seems trivial to me as you can always pop in a higher capacity HDD.

The learning curve isn't steep at all, getting used to basics takes minutes in most cases as everything is pretty neat and intuitive.

he has 1tb external hdd, so space is not a concern,
how much does The 13" MacBook Pro cost in india and dubai?

whats the maintenance cost, i hear there's some cost attached to it

or u just buy and run for 3 yrs?

and does it come loaded with os x/snow leopard..whatever the os it comes with.

the company warranty is 1 yr
to make it 3 yrs you need to get the protection plan which will cost something to the tune to 11k for the macbook it may be higher for the pro
apple warranty is worldwide :D

and yes it comes with snow leopard !

^ Where is he going to get it? In Dubai? If you buy online from sources other than Apple, you can always get good discounts.

You did not mention his budget though!

I'll voice out Macinstein's opinion.

Trust me; the Aluminum has better feel than polycarbonate. And it is sturdier, Polycarbonate is not a "true" unibody.

And the screen on the MBP is awesome! My Oct 2008 version pales in comparison to the new one.

And yeah "backlit keyboard" is a luxury that one would think how he managed without it ever. I don't have it in mine and miss it so much.

Plus with Macs there are these cool FireWire accessories. And FireWire 800 is faster as well as more capable than USB 2.0.

The SD card reader is a bonus thing and I'd rather have it in my notebook. Since Apple introduced the slot; there must be something cooking at Cupertino.

i'll suggest u to buy a MBP staring model MB990** which is good n fulfill all routine requirements . i bought one two months back n am happy with it.. i bought it for 10k discount as a availed the education discount.... so u can try that if u wanna save......mac rocks...simply the best

Please don't flame me but according to me Macbook's for some reason are crippled yes they look the best and have the most advanced OS of our time but for the general user I feel they are crippled. So I'd suggest a good notebook with Windows 7 (Dell Studio), Don't Kill Me.

^ It's like you murder someone and tell the police "don't arrest me, please!" .

The OP clearly wants a MacBook and there's no reason to debate whether or not to buy it. And Macs are now a better value than ever. There's absolutely no reason why a General user should be crippled with it. Macs are in fact better suited for the "general people" as you put it.

From what i see its depends on your taste and needs .. The Pro version does provide some extra options like Firewire(most imp imo as you would be using a extn drive) plus it looks better ..
