After CWG debacle, Again a big shame, Eden Gardens loses India-England fixture

Eden Gardens loses India-England fixture

Eden Gardens will not host the World Cup game between India and England on February 27, the ICC has said. The ICC's inspection team, which included some of the leading experts in the field of stadium and ground preparation, felt that Eden Gardens would not be ready by February 27. No alternate venue for the match has yet been named.

"Regrettably, Eden Gardens has not made sufficient progress to justify the level of confidence required to confirm that the venue would be ready in good time," Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, said. "This was no easy decision to take and while it is most unfortunate, it is absolutely necessary."

The news comes just two days after the tournament director, Ratnakar Shetty, waved away worries over readiness of World Cup venues. Media personnel had been barred from a recent inspection of Eden Gardens.

The venue, one of the largest cricket stadiums in the world, has hosted some of the highest-profile matches of the previous two World Cups held in the subcontinent including the final in 1987 and the semi-final in 1996.

"All venues had ample time in which to prepare for World Cup matches," Lorgat said. "We had been understanding and had provided extensions to the deadline dates but unfortunately we are now at a point where we must carefully manage our risks.

"The Central Organising Committee had provided venues with a deadline of 30 November 2010 to complete all construction work and then to be match-ready by 31 December 2010. An extension was granted by the ICC for five venues, which were again inspected over the past week. Sadly, Eden Gardens in Kolkata was unable to meet the final deadline date of 25 January 2011."

^^^The Bengali community should try doing some WORK for a change and getting things done rather than sitting in the coffee houses in and around college street and protesting about anything and everything, lamenting on the days gone by when Hilsa fish was cheap and Rabindra sangeet ruled the airwaves during Durga puja rather than the outrageous local rock bands now. Calcutta is a city which lives in the past and pushes itself into a chasm of absolute nothingness by sitting about idly day dreaming as its present and future decay and rot right with in its very foundations. The so called Bengali Intelligentsia is the core cause of Calcutta's/Bengal's decay and debilitating death today in the face of rapid progress all across the nation.

Half the time people protest and stop work and sit and smoke cigarettes and have tea and debate about everything but their economic growth. The politicians don't help by calling strikes/bandhs now and then. The impression people get when they visit the city is that of a dying city. So this declaration by the ICC is absolutely understandable. They should in fact shift all the games out of Calcutta to other venues should one of the shoddily constructed stands of the Eden gardens collapse and humiliate our national pride. CAB had a very long time to construct the required facilities and as expected slept and smoked cigarettes doing nothing but day dreaming. Dream on!!!!!!!

@Sunny27

Do you want to rephrase that buddy?

Or are you trying to pose as a "Mr.Know-It-All"

I agree things have not quite worked out , and the cause is "Corruption", which is widespread in our whole country, not just a single community

I am not trying to create an excuse but rather point at your misguided tyrade against a single community, when the issue is national.

Before you go about with your particularly infuriating attitude, you better stop and think about what you said

This is a national Forum, I fail to understand why your peculiar trait of Communal-ism is being ignored and/or tolerated by the mods

I for one find your post quite infuriating and hurtful in purpose.
