Air India Ahmedabad-London flight Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashes near airport in Ahmedabad

This may be considered India's worst aviation tragedy. Charkhi Dadri, while devastating, did not involve Indian carriers.

From what I have gathered, three likely causes may have led to the tragedy:

  1. Pilot error in flap/rudder adjustment
  2. Maintenance issues on Air India's part
  3. Boeing messed up the 787's long-term structural integrity by aligning mismatched hull gaps through force, as per whistleblowers

Probably off-topic, but if anyone feels scared or so to travel, this is only 1 crash out of 30-something million flights per year.
Yeah, that's what makes this accident so perplexing.

Nothing new here, nearly everything is being speculated upon.

Regarding the flaps not being extended, there is an image of the wing where it is extended. The 787 has a digital checklist and an incorrect take off configuration warning, so it would be extremely odd if the configuration was wrong. In past cases, when that happened, the planes were nowhere stable or had even that amount of lift.

The only ADS-B data point indicates a ground sped of 184 knots just after takeoff which is also in range.

The RAT deployment cannot be easily made out but combined the reports of the Mayday call stating no thrust, it seems a catastrophic double engine failure, which may have raised its head already when rolling down the runway.

Anyway, the black boxes are in the rear, and the elevator section was lodged separately in the building, so will be retrieved relatively quickly and the preliminary report should be out in a month or so.
Are you ruling out pilot error?

Did you forget the Kanishk crash in '85?

I thought we ruled this one out

Oh man I'm scared to watch this video... He sees bjp conspiracy in everything so not sure if his bias has made it to this tragedy video too
If you ever have any interest in Plane Crash Investigations., Avoid the dramatic ones and watch AllecJoshua channel. Watch at 1.25x and you will get interesting cases. It's insane that the worst aviation disaster in the world was because the pilot missed 3 words out of 4 in a command by ATC due to headphone static noise.

A lot of factors contributed to the Tenerife tragedy.

  1. Incorrect phraseology by the ATC
  2. Choked radio waves
  3. Airport handling too many large aircraft at the same time
  4. Pan Am had the wrong exit clearance
  5. KLM head captain's overconfidence
  6. Captain prioritizing meeting duty-hour deadlines over protocol
  7. The first pilot and engineer had major reservations, but chose not to challenge the captain
  8. Allowing the captain to immediately operate after a gap of 12 weeks of not flying (due to simulation training)
  9. Extended refuelling led to the fog getting worse

I think a lot of flights happen successfully with a lot of faults like overconfidence and traffic. But misheard words such as "Get ready for Takeoff" instead of "Takeoff " is a massive misunderstanding. They fixed the words later. Now you can only use the word takeoff when the plane is ready for takeoff.

Miscommunication + an impatient pilot = several innocent lives lost. Extremely heart-breaking

indicates what am trying to convey. Considering this is an international flight, do other international companies practice this in India ?
Now, flap configuration during take off issue is being talked about.
everyone does lol, its not like a car AC which you turn on, when you are at altitude, you need to figure out ways to warm the air instead of cooling it, on ground there are ground units which manually run the AC for Aircrafts in the terminal, Engines arent spooled when a plane is standing at the gate, both for avoiding unnecessary expenditure and from a safety perspective, aircraft are first pushed back from the terminal, and only when they get clearance from ATC, they spool their engines. Thats standard SOP, if Indian Airlines didnt follow this, they would have been blacklisted from most international airports like Pakistan's National carrier is.

The Americans are not going to sit back while the shares of Boeing are down . I am sure a team will arrive or are already on their way to recover the black box .

The passenger who escaped reportedly said that there was a loud explosion . So Sabotage seems to be the first thing that comes up on my mind . Someone wanted something (s) or some passenger (s) gone is what comes to me . The Boeing plane getting faulty on both the engines especially when it can fly with 1 engine and multiple redundancies factored in and with pilots who are quite experienced , I am somehow missing why and how an experienced pilot or a modern plane can fail to take off . It was just an hour and a half since the flight arrived from Delhi .
This flap theory , Air India maintenance schedule all seem bogus theories at the moment to me at least and I would place them in the disinformation list for now .

A lot of things in my head right now.
I'm a relative (a brother) of one of the victims (the mods can verify this via my real name and address @Crazy_Eddy ) and things have been really hard especially on the immediate family. If not for the exhausting day I had yesterday before I heard the news I wouldn't have been able to sleep. Many of us have lost our appetite and the will to go on our daily lives even though we are at our most busy season. Got up to see the morning with nothing but tears. Some of my family members said they have left for Ahmedabad.
The videos of the crash being circulated don't help. The videos need to be heavily censored or blocked. Everyone and their mother want to be "breaking news."
And the most f'd up thing, the issue is being sensationalized and communalised in our region with the so-called local youtubers and influencers posting hate and propaganda. The lack of basic compassion and humanity is showing. Even at this time of mourning people are arguing and fighting for their own publicity and political benefits.

I was trying to free my mind and randomly dropped in and saw the thread so thought I'd share it.

ignore these assholes, they'll sell their own family if it would get them TRP/money, unfortunately that's all you can do, my condolences for your loss

So sorry you have to deal with all this on a closer level compared to rest of us. We can all say that we understand but in all honesty, we can't fathom the things you'll be going through.
Media and people sharing videos online are being very insensitive. In a race to get views and followers, we are lacking civic sense. Media is shoving the cameras in the faces of families of the deceased and people are making videos of the bodies and circulating like these are daily good morning forwards. This crash will soon be forgotten and we'll have a new accident/incident/crime to talk about again in a few months. At least that's the pattern of this year for all of us.

A crash which is 1/10th of this scale goes very well investigated in the aviation industry and I'm sure this will be thoroughly studied for years to come.

You take care of yourself dude. Let's all be grateful for the life we have.

@iPwnz, so sorry for your loss.
I pray for you and your family, and the next of kin affected to find strength at this hour.

Brother, our best thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Stay off social media for a while. The need for digital attention has destroyed most of our humanity.

The one on takeoff configuration is very unlikely. But the most prevalent theory is that the pilot not flying initially retracted the flaps instead of the landing gear as procedure would dictate the landing gear being stowed after positive rate of climb which this plane did have at takeoff.

Will know soon enough when the preliminary report is out.

Why would that cause double engine failure as is being reported/speculated?
