Airtel introduces two new 4G/ 3G data packs that offer great value to data users – the more you recharge, the more you save

The Rs.1498 pack offers 1GB 4G/3G data upfront with a validity of 28 days. Post exhaustion of this data limit, the customer can enjoy 1GB 4G/3G recharges for just Rs.51 over a period of 12 months. There is no limit on the number of recharges during the period and higher the number of recharges the more value a customer gets.

Similarly, the Rs.748 pack offers 1GB 4G/3G data upfront and post exhaustion of this data limit, customers can enjoy 1GB 4G/3G recharges for just Rs.99 over a period of six months. There is no limit on the number of recharges during the period.

I guess Airtel has to resort to these convoluted schemes to try and keep users from jumping ship.

It's like getting a Gym membership for 12 months or 6 months and paying the up-front costs, then hardly every visiting the gym once in a blue moon. Only useful for regular users.

If Airtel really wants to be consumer friendly ("superior experience and great value" as quoted in the link) they should just drop the current Rs. 252 pack of 1 GB for 28 days to around Rs. 100-150 and be done with it, but of course they won't.

For people making full paisa vasool of this plan , I guess regular/dedicated users can get value of this cost being under Rs. 100 per GB.

For occasional users this will cost around Rs. 200 per GB - still bit better than current 252 recharge plan.

Still it comes to around Rs.125 p.m which is not very attractive for 4G speeds and a full one year commitment. Anyways. always better than what they are offering today.

They had recently got permission for these annual and 6 moth data recharges. i was expecting cheap plans that have high validity for infrequent data users than these. For regular users it seems like a good strategy to keep them locked in.

Who does Airtel need to get the permission from? I am also pissed off with this 28 day recharge business. Why can't it be just 1 calendar month?

Government should force them to convert 28 days to monthly cycles . Forget the expensive yearly recharge they are offering which is of no use to most people who have some sort of Internet broadband at home.

Is it 1498 ( 1 GB) + 11 *51 for 1GB per month for one year (assuming your usage is 1 GB per month)? That comes to Rs 171 per month for 1GB.

Who does Airtel need to get the permission from?

Private operators cannot usually reduce mobile/internet charges in a way that would impact BSNL. Airtel was made to pay hefty penalties for offering SMS @ 10p in the past and was forced to increase the prices.

TRAI controls various things like Min rate to charge for SMS, how many SMS can bundled for free or at discount, max validity period of data plans and many other things like that.

Im sure there are way better price cuts when JIO launches fully hopefully. Has been such a long wait and delay. Even their snorlax has turned into a hitmonchan but no sign of JIO formal laucnh yet. hopefully before 2017.
