Telecom major Bharti Airtel today said it will offer broadband speed of 50 mbps, which will enable its customers to download full length movies in a few minutes, for Rs 8,999 per month.

Initially, the service would be available in select few locations in Delhi and Gurgaon. It will later be rolled out in Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore in phases.

"We are delighted to introduce 50 mbps speed -- the fastest, wired broadband service. This ultra-fast broadband connection will allow customers, the convenience to download songs in seconds and full length feature films in less than three minutes," Bharti Airtel Joint President (Telemedia Services) K Srinivas said in a statement.

For example, a full length movie is about 700 MB in size and with a download speed of 50 mbps, it would take about 3-4 minutes to download the entire film.

The company will offer 50 Mbps Internet speed at Rs 8,999 per month, with free data transfer up to 200 GB and additional free value added services (VAS) like parallel ringing, website builder (basic), antivirus software, online storage and unlimited gaming on games on demand. The 7,999 plan would have the same offerings at 30 mbps broadband speed.

Airtel provides broadband (DSL) and telephone services (fixed line) in 94 cities and has 29.88 lakh customers as on December 31, 2009. Of these, 41.5 per cent subscribe to broadband/internet services, it said.

awesome plan. 50mbps and the given bandwidth quota will get over in half a day. and you get to pay 9 grand

edit - although i suppose 200gb is more than most of us even use in a month.

^^But where are you going to store all the data that u dload if they give you 500GB or even 1TB? Are you going to buy a new 1TB HDD every 15days or 1month?

But one good thing is, they are atleast giving us an option of 50mbps though at bit high premium.

somebody file a PIL against all these bloody ISP and somehow make them release the bandwidth.

that too before the govt starts taking interest in the cyber laws.

What I don't get is who opts for these ridiculous plans. I mean since the product is there, I guess it must be aimed at some category of customer...

^^These plans are aimed at people who download few huge files(like HD movies) but want to download them VERY VERY quickly.

These plans are not for those who spends their life downloading the whole internet(like most of us :p ).

Even though i don't like this plan much, i don;t feel like cribbing about it nor scold Airtel. Frankly, Airtel is doing a decent job even though they hardly have any competition.

Situation woul've been different if there was any other Nationwide Private Operator like Vodafone...

im one of "them" i currently have an 8 mbps plan with 50gb download limit and struggle to reach the quota every month :D my main concern is the speed to get things done fast at the last moment...

Airtel, Instead of 9k i would pay would 20k/per month. but just make is Unlimited without any data caps:)

Do we even have legal movie download services in India? :S

Yes, sir. there are number of services, its just there the bandwidth to get these content is missing.

E.g YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

Once, there is proper internet. these kinds of services would raining like cats and dogs

Don't really need that much space. 1tb-2tb should enough. because you can reclaim the space by deleting after watching the Movie:D

actually, I think they are misinformed about their target segment. they would be surpresed on how many connections they would sell if they start launching faster UL plans. we lets face it, nobody likes data caps.

Infact data caps are reason by which billing errors happen and average customer does not understand why browsing youtube is counted in download, because for them its not a download. in laymen sense, they are just viewing it and NOT downloading it:lol: plus, there is issue of download of mistake - like I clicked on a large file my mistake or a malware download without my permission. by the time I realize my mistake - it would have been already download. Also, accounted in my bandwidth quota

so better is ISPs launch UL plans and get free of this headache of constanly checking their usage from customers. Airtel, Give us Tension Free Internet:D

Only drawback in this "plan" that I see is the exorbitant cost. At those rates they should be offering the consumers 100mbit lines.

Thing is, even American ISPs have a FUP policy. In fact they are not even nice about it that your speed will be reduced to half when you go over the limit. They simply cut off your connection. No questions asked.

For example, Comcast has a 250GB per month limit on all their plans, be it 2mbps or 20mbps.

As far as downloading goes, I am sure not all of us watch each and every movie that is released on IPT. Not all of us watch each and every episode of each and every show. So breaching that limit should not be too easy. If you are a downloading freak, then such a plan is obviously not for you. MTNL is the way to go then. :)

200GB is more than enough . Those who are complaining about the 10 hr thing , well you get 1 Gbps in Korea . That doesnt mean you will always keep it on and leech 250 TB . The only problem with the plan is that its ridiculously expensive , shouldve been 1/3r of this price to be an excellent choice.

Agree with you there. Most of the people don't know that they are downloading even while browsing and watching videos. That and also that they think that the 100MBPS in their system tray is their internet speed. Then they wonder why they are not getting that speed.

I have only when objection to Fair Usage policy i.e. ISPs makin false claims.

* When they have limit of xxGB/month on plan, why you they advertise it as unlimited and try to trap innocent customers into their marketing gimmicks.

This is just plain wrong! no amount of justification can make this practice right

Infact I have no problems with imposing limits/caps, if they improve overall Quality of service. example: plans should be sold as 50Gb bandwidth at Rs750/- with speeds of 2mbps.monthly bandwidth quota and plan speed should clearly mentioned

I am would be more than happy to adopt such plans

There is nothing wrong with this plan except for the pricing.
People complaining about just how quickly the 200GB limit will be reached when downloading continuously at 50Mb/s need to shut up :).

Well sad thing is all abt lie by isp its more that 70% of bandwidth is not in use for airtel. Its just they love to lie and make customer pay for whatever they wish as there is no rivals for airtel and many other operatores. as far as this 50mbps is concern well 200gb a month is not bad. because if u download 200gb of stuff i am sure no one have that much of time to watch all 200gb in same month.
