Looks like Alan Wake 2 might be under development as we speak!

He tweeted the following last night: “It’s all true. ‘It will happen again, in another town, a town called Ordinary.’ It’s happening now.”
The tweet contained a link to a short story that basically screams ‘Wake’.

We know for sure that the story doesn't end with American Nightmare as has been confirmed by Remedy. What happened in AWAN was sort of a story in an alternate dimension. Our haunted writer is still searching for clues. And that I hope is good news!

American Nightmare has nothing to do with the main story. This sequel will be the follow-up to the original game's 'The Writer' DLC. The story titled 'Return'.
