Presler and FX 60 face off

TWO IS better than one. Unless you're talking troubles, that is.

Alienware thinks it's customers will want to double up to dual-core machines and says it aims to provide whatever the market demands. And, unlike Dell, it offers both AMD and Intel CPUs.

Alienware's Athlon FX60-based Aurora 7500 system will support all Dual Core AMD CPU's including the just-released FX60. It supports SLI configurations and, if you choose the AXL series, comes with water cooling as well. The machine sports 1GB Ram, a 250GB disk and dual 7800 GTX 256s. The dual 7800 GTX 512 configuration may well be delayed until February 7th, however.

Alienware also serves up an Intel offering, the Area 51 7500, powered with Pentium D 950 processor running two cores at 3.4 GHz each, with 2MB of cache. With 1GB of memory, and an Nvidia 7800 GTX 256MB, the price starts at $1,889, at least 'til the sales end.

You can boost some of these specifications but it will cost you more.

A second machine is known as Area 51 5500 and comes with Pentium D 930 CPU, 512MB memory, a Geforce 6600GT card and 80GB hard drive and starts from $1,389.

Insane!!!! Who in their right minds would buy one of these???

CHK out its comparison with AMD FX60(2.6Ghz) 2x1 = 2MB L2 Cache and 90nm ...... and u will see how it is crap :)

I was about to buy one of these actually but I'm looking around for more info first.

You guys obviously know your stuff so perhaps you could tell me why it's insane.

I need a machine both for games and some pretty heavy multi-tasking office work (huge ppt, pdf, doc files, etc.). My current computer serves me pretty well (Athlon 2.2 Ghz 3200, GeForce 6600 GT, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD) but even this starts to slow down when I'm working on large files, and some games could run a hell of a lot smoother. And as a new machine would come off my taxable pay, it eventually works out nearly half price anyway :-)

The Aurora 7500 (Athlon 64 X2 4000, Dual GeForce 7800 GTX SLi, Soundblaster Xtreme, 2GB RAM, 500GB HD) looks like it would run all my games at the highest settings and be future-proofed for some time.

Dell is a bit cheaper for almost the same machine but does not say anything about the quality of the CPU cooling or say anything at all about cooling for the graphics cards (which I would've thought would be pretty essential for that dual set-up).

I've tried other vendors but they're all inferior or the same price with less bits.

I've even looked into buying all the components and building but even like this it seems to come to the same price.

So are you saying it's insane because of the price? If so, then how can I get that configuration cheaper.

Or are you saying it's insane because it's too powerful for anything it's likely to be used for?

Thanks!

not sure how prices are in the UK but if the aurora works out to a similar price comared to a self build then go for it ..

glsutcliffe, One thing i can add to bottle's post is for this "both for games and some pretty heavy multi-tasking office work (huge ppt, pdf, doc files, etc.)" and much more aurora would surely suffice.

and a 6600GT!! For 1400$!!!! Outrageous!!!

dude FX 60 is alone 1000$ :D... anyways u can customise the thing this is the cheapest one ..... the high end cost around 5000$ with SLI or CF :D

Thanks for the feedback guys! It came to £2400 (for the AMD 64 model) which is about USD$ 4300. It's strange but buying the separate components really didn't work out much cheaper, and then you factor in the build, wiring, and cooling quality of Alienware, I figured I might as well just save the hassle. Then take off about £900 because it'll come off my tax bill, and then the fact that I'm giving my wife my old computer, which is still pretty hot (the computer I mean :-D ), it's not such a bad deal economically.

alienware already released thier dual 7800 512mb under the alx series long back.
now they got thier dual x1900 crossfires out under alx (with an fx-60 of course)

now which person with a bottomed pocket in his right mind would buy alienware. its insane. drool maal but nevertheless insane.

another drool maal is the dell xps renegade - quad 7800 512 - downright senile.(wish i had one). lol
