It only does everything!

We didn't have a dedicated thread for PS3 so I thought of creating this one.

I'm no PS3 expert, so I'll need a lot of help and content from other members. :)

I don't know if anyone wants to learn about the PS3 specifications and all as we all can use Uncle Google for that so basically the idea is to share things based on experience, any tricks that you may know, those big and small issues and their resolutions, etc.

Questions, Modifications (to the thoughts shared), Criticism and all are welcome. :)

But, please don't start a console war here! :P

I'll kick this off by posting something about the PS3 which I had earlier posted in an answer to a query in some other thread. (Mods, please don't consider this as Double or Cross posting because I'm not trying to gain anything by doing so)

Is PS3 region free?

All the PS3 games are region free. That means it dosent mater where you bought the console, or where you buy your games, they will all be combatible.

There are a few things to be aware of though.

First the games still exist in PAL, or NTSC versions. That means if your are using and older TV wich does not have HDMI, some games will not work correct, you may expirience weird colors, or black white screen or other odd things. If you use a new TV with HDMI there is nothing to worry about. since when using HDMI signals there is no suchs things as PAL, or NTSC.

Second. if you import a game from another region. You must also buy eventual DLC from the store wich your original game is linked with.

Third. Some games have region locked online play. wich means if you import a US game, you will only be able to play online with other people who have the US version.

Fourth. The bluray movies are still region locked. So you cant import US movies to watch on your EU PS3 unless the movie it self is region free.

can you put links to some good PS3 games, different models available in the market, their pricing, difference in features etc?

@desibond the best buy as of now would be the 250GB GOWIII bundle PS3. You can get one from our TE dealer Prashanth.

For good games you may want to check out sites like Metacritic, Gamerankings, IGN, Gamespot for good scoring games.

The ones that I can suggest are: Killzone2, Uncharted2, MGS4, LittleBigPlanet, GOW series, Resistance2, inFamous, etc

For differences in features you may want to check out following links:

As suggested by Roxtin, you may get a good deal for the ps3 from Praashant.

I would suggest going for a Slim model, the capacity (120 or 250) depending on your requirement.

As indicated by Roxtin, there are some bundle offers available wherein you can find some good games free!

Mate u might wanna put up a guide that explains this.

PC ->(wired) ADSL WIFI MODEM --> (wireless) PS3 and how to setup a media server. would help a lot of people including me.

One small tip. Most people should be knowing it.

Problem: If you are moving the PS3 from a full HDTV to a tv with lower resolution tv (& you forgot to reset the resolution to that of the lower resolution tv). When you connect it to the lower res tv, there will be no output since the video output will still be full HD & the lower res tv can't take it. It happend to me once..

Solution: Turn off the PS3, then hold down the power button for 3-5 seconds. The console will restart & with a resolution of 480i.

Some tips w.r.t ventilation & cooling to ensure the PS3 (esp. the phat models) lasts longer -

*Ensure that the PS3 is kept and operated in such a place which would provide it with sufficient airflow.

*Do not keep it with its back in close proximities with a wall or obstruction - this way the exit vents are blocked.

*Never keep the PS3 on an enclosed compartment either. This will hamper the airflow through the PS3 and would lead to YLOD soon enough.

*Some may argue that the PS3 (phat ones esp.) if kept vertical on a base would last longer than one which's kept horizontally! Pretty much debatable - w.r.t airflow there should be minimal differences. The PS3 has a natural inlet and forced exhaust.

*W.r.t the phat models, do not game for prolonged hours! Take a 30 mins to 1 hr break during every 5~6 hours of continuous gaming to ensure that the console cools down. You may hear a cracking noise from the unit whilst cooling down - this is quite normal. Prolonged usage leads to overheating thanks to the mediocre cooling of the PS3! (The slim model does not sport vent holes in the front either!)

*Do not use the PS3 for running Folding @ Home application! This application stresses the Cell to its limits when not being used or whilst idling/browsing the internet etc. As a result it sucks a lot of power and releases a lot of heat. Continuous usage of the F@H client WILL lead to a YLOD!

*Do not use the PS3 as a torrent download system either! It is an unneccesary power hog and will eventually lead to a YLOD if the application is made to run 24x7! You are better off with a small Atom based system or something similar for this purpose.

*When not being used for a prolonged duration, cover the PS3 so as to ensure dust does not settle in the vent holes.

*When you run out of warranty for the console esp. the phat units, it is advisable to open up the unit and clean the stock TIM beneath the respective bases of heatsinks for the RSX & Cell and replace it with a better one such as the MX2. There are several disassembly tutorials/videos floating on the WWW. This is one!

i think the title of the thread is very misleading.

one needs to only hop onto the Wikipedia for the all abt ps3 type info.

What TE and all of us for that matter can do is to have a thread which would share the personal experience ranging from the ways to keep the YLOD from happening, and other such stuff.

the formatting in the OP is not upto the mark nor is the content spell checked.

i was expecting more exhaustive info in the starting post itself.

Good initiative by kestrel but pics which shows pertinent issues like YLOD or something like differences in the 2 variations of the ps3 would have been good.

YLOD is passé already! When was the last time you heard a slim PS3 YLOD'ed? :P

The newer slim PS3 sports a beefier centrifugal fan compared to the phat models . Besides, since the slim version gets a die shrink for the RSX (90nm to 65nm) and the Cell (90/60nm to 45nm), the TDP of the respective chips are brought down to a fairly large extent and works far efficient and cooler at the same time.

Here's another YLOD repair guide mentioned step-by-step.
