Budget: 25K, could throw in few extra k if justified.

Existing Config: I have a Dell Laptop, Altec Lansing FX5051:bleh:
A Dell E190S monitor with max res 1280 x 1024, got used for a good price.

Which Hardware to keep: Only the Monitor and speakers, dont have anything else.

What am I looking to buy:

Proccy: Intel Core I3 or I5 - please suggest.
Mobo: compatible mobo..(monitor has VGA port).
GPU: sufficient to work with above Dell Monitor.
SMPS, RAM: Please advise.
Cabby: which would do the job (prefer tool-less design).
HDD: 500GB/1 TB (whichever fits the budget).
UPS: Need one as power is erratic.

Upgradability: Stage 2: After 6 months, will get a bigger monitor, something like Dell U2311H, and a better PSU and GFX card. AT this point the budget does not allow buying everything at one go. Once the monitor has been upgraded, will use the system for a couple of years at least.

Please suggest processor, board and memory keeping Stage 2 in mind. Also, would it be better to get a PSU which would be adequate for the present, and then upgrade the PSU in Stage 2, or does it make more sense getting a better PSU now?

Second Hand: Don't think so.

Intended use: Gaming, movies, browsing, etc - regular usage.

No brand preference or dislike.

Games: Mostly driving, or strategy games, also some FPS. Need to catch up on the gaming :hap5:.

Monitor resolution: Max@current monitor, med-high settings with upgraded monitor.

No Overclocking.

OS: WIn 7 64 bit, Win XP.

Questions: If the board supports 1333Mhz ram, installing 1600/1800Mhz ram makes sense? :huh:
: Extra fans are required if the room has AC?
: Does a reputed brand UPS also have an inbuilt surge protector?

Thanks vantheman. I was wondering if we could save a few bucks by geting a lower priced cabby. If you add 700 for Keyboard mouse, that takes the budget to 30K.

Lets have a couple more options for the GPU.

I was thinking if everything including the UPS could be arranged around 30K... I guess a halfway decent UPS would be around 2k.

Also I think some time back I saw some combo deals for proc and mobo in the dealer section...
 
Considering you will be buying a GPU and monitor at a later stage, it is wise to buy suitable components right now rather than getting it later. Buy a good PSU right now instead of having to upgrade later again. PSUs are often neglected and when you are upgrading to a good GPU you may happen to fall short on cash for PSU and end up using a cheaper one. The components that I have picked out are considering you will be gaming at full HD later.

I do believe you should save up and buy everything at a later stage, but yeah 6 months is a long time, so here goes:

Now this is where you could save money and should do IMO.

Instead of getting a new 5670, look in the market section for an old 5670 or any cheaper alternative within 2k. You will be gaming at 1280x1024 and even a cheap GPU would suffice for that.

Alternatively, you could skip the GPU completely and use the onboard GPU of the i5 2400. It should be fine at 1024x768 or 1280x1024 low settings if you're playing old games. But I believe you would crave for more FPS for newer games.

You can save a few hundred by getting a standard USB mouse instead of the MX518.

If you are strictly on a budget, replace the i5 2400 with an i3 2100 which costs 5.5k.
 
Nice config there Viralbug, the only thing that's overrated here is the PSU, he can easily settle for a VX450(if available) or a VX550 or any other 80 Certified PSU ~ 450W.

BTW PSU is the fastest ageing component in a computer so buying a 650W now and adding 2X120W SLI/Croosfire GFX 3 years later may not to be a good idea.

Wont be able to stretch budget beyond 30k, though.

Total for above comes to be 23300. That leaves around 6700 for cabby, PSU and UPS. Do the iball genre cabbies(around 1000-1200) work well?

What do you think about the PSU suggested by vantheman: PSU/SMPS Corsair CX430 v2 ~ 2200

By 5-6 months Ill have another 30-35k for monitor, GPU and PSU, and could accomodate the Logitech MX 518 as well. A TF2 fanatic I know has that mouse and it is surely worth the price.

Nice config there
Only psu seems to be on higher side
Some seasonic 520 is also being recommended near 3.5k in other threads
It will also save some bucks

you can also opt for 2x2 1600mhz corsair sticks for better scope of increasing later
 
Ok yeah the PSU does seem to be a bit too much for the config. :P I was suggesting different configs and got a little mixed up. :ashamed:

The Seasonic S12II 520W is a decent PSU and the minimum you should go for. Corsair VX550 is a good choice as well.
