AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT Custom Model Reportedly Suffers From High VRAM Temperatures; Memory Can Hit Over 90°C
AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT VRAM Reaches 88°C in One Instance, and 94°C in Another
While the GPU core runs at a decent temperature under load, the VRAM modules can go as hot as 90°C on the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT.
AMD's most powerful RDNA 4 GPUs were released a few days ago, and their retail launch will start on March 6th. As some users (mostly reviewers) got their hands on the GPUs early, we have been learning about their behavior, apart from their supposed performance.
We recently
reported one of the first FurMark tests of the Radeon RX 9070 XT, which showed impressive thermals at full load. In another leaked benchmark, a user on the Bilibili forum (now removed) showcased how, even though the GPU can maintain satisfactory temperatures at its core, the VRAM section can go quite hot.
As you can see, these are two different GPU-Z windows, showing how two different editions of the Radeon RX 9070 XT can reach nearly 90°C of temperature on the VRAM. In the first case, under full load, the GPU temperature at the hot spot reaches a max of 63°C but the memory temperature touches 88°C. In another instance, the GPU reaches 79°C at the GPU hotspot but a whopping 94°C on the VRAM.
The surprising thing to note in the first case is that the TBP is only 237W, which seems weird considering the Radeon RX 9070 XT starts at a TBP of 260W. This might be a bug or so, but in the second case, the GPU-Z window is showing a decent 329W of TBP. The user has confirmed that the first one isn't the RX 9070 as one would think, but it is the RX 9070 XT as well.
As far as the max limit for VRAM temperature is concerned, the RX 9070 XT touched almost the upper limit of 95°C. This could be the result of inadequate airflow or, most likely, a thermal pad issue. While it won't damage the GPU, it could throttle performance, especially when the VRAM is exposed to such temperatures for longer periods.
Another disadvantage of high VRAM temps is losing the potential to overclock the VRAM clock, which is definitely something enthusiasts wouldn't like. However, the Core Clock seems pretty much fine for overclocking and stuff.
We haven't heard about this issue before, but since we are just getting started with this series, it is possible that we may hear more such cases, or it is also possible that the issue remains pretty rare and might be limited to a certain custom model rather than the entire lineup. We will find out more once the GPUs start to hit the shelves on 6th March.
