[TD="class: message, bgcolor: #F0F0F0"]Aliance broadband kolkata directly provides a RJ 45 cable.
What I want is a router that does not require a main computer to be turned on to login and then keep it on to get the wifi signal on my other components....It's like, I should just plug the router and even if I don't turn on my desktop, I can use the WiFi on my laptop....Is that possible??
In my present bsnl connection the router+modem dials the username and password itself and i do not need the desktop to dial the username password.I want the same thing with alliance broadband. Is it possible??

No, not possible.
For that you are going to need PPPoE, and they don't provide PPPoE connection.

basically, any router will serve the purpose!
just set up the router,i.e. put in the correct ip address, lan, dns, etc.
its very simple, and don't forget to use "MAC clone" feature of the router to clone ur pc's mac address,if u don't do this u won't be able to login!

and then u use wifi on ur phone or laptop or anything else, important point here is that when you first try to login u will be taken to the alliance login page, now u know what to do next!!;)
in case u are wondering if there's a way to setup the router to autoconnect/login,then i don't think thats possible...

Its very simple basically.I have been using and Asus RT-N10+ (about 1300 bucks) for this purpose for around 2yrs now
Buy any router and when You first plug it in you will be taken to the Quick setup page where u have to select PPoE type connection and punhc in the IP address/DNS settings that the Alliance guys provided for your PC.
I didn't know about the MAC cloning part and initially had issues logging in with a device other than the PC to which the LAN cable was initially attached but a call to the service centre and telling them to turnoff the MAC checking for my user account rectified the issue.

How do you login in to the account? You need to use your PC to login. Without PPPoE you can't login from the router itself.

if the laptop/phone is connected to the router, then if one tries to open any webpage, alliance login page loads up...then from there simply login using id n password...

ok, as I thought.
I was talking about direct login from router using PPPoE, which isn't possible without the presence of PPPoE.

alliance uses a static IP and MAC protected login system .... no PPPoE involved as setup costs increase in such setups . Basically if you want to access net you will have a device .. no matter what it is it will open the login page , for me it has never auto disconnected . It only disconnects if i have a face ping loss of some sort .
