Laptops Almost ready to get my first lappy!!Need some tips

MAGNeT

Forerunner
So finally i m ready to get my 1st lappy....

Have finalized either dell inspiron 6400 or dell inspiron 1520..
most probably the 1520 one

Now i want to know is it better to customize the processer to 7100 or let it remain as it is ....if no bigger difference....
Also changing the gfx card to 8600 256mb will make any difference..??

ALso do i customised 2gb ram from them or i do it personally???

Also what abt the new wifi adapter which are available in santa rossa???can that too be customized???

Also is it better to get 9 batteries??

I know the system will go pass 50k margin if i change the proccy....but i m trying hard not to exceed the limit pass 48k.....

How are dell in bargains..if model customised cost 56k how much i should bargain for...

Also if any hp model that good available do recommend......and also do they entertain bargain..System will be bought from India, mumbai as i have no relative in Green card land..

So suggestions are welcome

*Get the 1520

*Processor will make a difference if you'r running CPU intensive apps (duh! :P)

*Yes that graphic card is better than the other as its also 256MB.

It will be cheaper to get ram elsewhere but i think it'l have an effect on warrant o so.. If you can, get ram from them.. no issues.

*Not too sure about the wifi adapter but i dont think it makes a diff

*Yes get a 9 cell battery

*Not sure exactly how much u cna bargain but you can convince them to include tax and/or give you some small freebies (or free upgrades)

I would suggest u go for the DELL VOSTRO 1500..

here's why..

1520 comes with a base proccy T5250..1.5 GHz 667 Mhz FSB against the base proccy of T5470 1.66 Ghz 800 Mhz FSB in the vostro..!!

the latter is definitely faster..u dont need to upgrade to the 7100 in that case..

if u configure the 1520 with the T5450 1.66 Ghz 667Mhz proccy(compared to the 800MHz on the T5470), it wud cost u 4k more than an identical (yet slightly faster) VOSTRO 1500

U can choose between home basic and home premium and save some cash if u wish..or just go with a DOS installed system and save another 5k..!!

Its an all black chassis with chrome accents which, personally, wud look a lot cooler than the 1520..

on the downside though, it doesnt have an integrated webcam..(correct me if i'm wrong here..)!!

1. get the Vostro..its an absolute no-brainer of a choice..

2. stick with the base proccy on the vostro

3. Get the RAM from outside..spending 10k on DELL ram is a waste of money..

u can always remove the RAM before u give it in for warranty repairs..

4. the GFX card is 8600GT..its a great card and pretty future proof for lappys..the price diff bet the standard 8400 and 8600GT is hardly 2.5k i think..take this upgrade at that price..

5.WI-FI will be built in and will conform to the a/g standard..the new standard u r talkin about is the "n" std..but its still in the draft stage and u shudnt worry too much abt it..asides, dell doesnt offer that option in India, yet.

6.its better to get the 9cell battery if u dont mind the added weight..

7. bargain with the dell sales rep and he should be able to drop the price by 1-2k min and include the taxes in that price as well..

HP has released new santa rosa notebooks but nuthing that wud match DELL in terms of performance and options..

u cud wait a while for the ACER ASPIRE 5920G "Gemstone" (7300, 2gig RAM, 8600GT etc. etc.)lappys, but they wud priced betn 65-70k..

so, dell is ur best bet for now..

couple of other suggestions:

-> include the 1 year complete cover option

-> go in for a WXGA+ screen, 1440X900, with a True Life screen..

All the best . .

Well thanks for the recommendation ankit and bassha especially

Wont go for acer thats sure since acer has the shittiest service here...i know becoz my frnd has 1 lappy frm them...

Well tried configuring both vostro and inspiron....and difference comes to ard 6k......Also since first time hearing abt vostro so i m not getting ready for it....Also since i wanted the green colour one as i dont like black in lappy atlest ...

But i wanted to know will dell except the stuff that i dont want vista with inspiron or is it a compulsion???

Also vostro doesnt have some bluetooth support how much difference that makes??

Also down the line 2-3 months will there be some price cut ard or any date as such...i can wait since its not like a urgent buy stuff

and ya vostro doesnt include webcam..but thats not a priority

with inspiron vista is a must/compulsion

vostro has the same bluetooth support as the inspiron..!!

i doubt if there wud be price cuts on these machines..u might get some upgrade offers but nothing more. . .

I m getting this its not in warranty

he is quoting 67k.....after all my upgrades and taxes my dell shows 55k+ quote....

If its not wht must be the rate i shd get it??

Thats an old Macbook dude. The G4 is pretty old i guess.....n for that price :P

Especially the fact that it has no warranty. In case something goes wrong with the lappie its gonna cost you a BOMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Steer clear and get the DELL :D

so is a 9-cell battery, which is bigger and heavier.

If someone buys a 9-cell battery, isn't it optional to use. I mean, it should be like when u need additional battery backup, plug it in.

Please enlighten me on this issue

9-cell is an optional extra, or, u can take that as the default battery too, i think. Not sure. Either way, its gonna add up to the weight. but if u have it as an optional extra, it'll be a pain lugging it around :P

besides, u can plug the laptop to the AC mains whenever u have AC source and run on battery only when needed.

Yeah 9 cell can be taken as default too and i recommend it to many people (choose 9 cell as default) as its only a lil extra weight but at least you get more battery back up :)

T7100 is the bottom processor in Santa Rosa lineup, not bad but still weak compared to T7300/T7500/T7700 .. especially considering that cost of upgrading to T7300 and T7500 is not much. But yah, N series is not a bad buy acutally, though you would get a Dell/HP with a much better config at the same price.
