I have a nokia 5230 and am planning to take backup of all its messages, contacts etc before i give it to service center. I will be doing the usual backup using the internal backup utility as well as nokia PC suite which creates the nbp files (i think).
But is there any other way by which i can backup my mobile's contents on PC, especially the messages and contacts ??

Those both ways are the official ways to backup a phone. Apart from you can backup the mobile contents using different phone managers but then they all accomplish the same. BTW why are you sending the phone to the service center.

Actually i am facing this automatic restart issue with my phone so want to show it to service center and tell them straight away that i have tried all things in the book namely, soft reset, hard reset, firmware upgrade, and even pooja of the phone :P but nothing seems to work and my phone restarts sometimes changing settings and frequently when messaging which is a big PITA for me since i message frequently.
I hope they replace my phone. Will be going today evening to the nokia care in Aundh.

Hahaha pooja of the phone :bleh: anyway best of luck with that :)

Since you have backed up using PC suite, you should not worry much.

BTW, I use Google Sync to backup all my contacts on my gmail account, so whenever I do a hard reset I can always get my contacts back by just syncing through google sync.

Is there any way to make google sync work Over the air over my EDGE connection ?

Also in that case i want that my contacts should be updated in google sync (or whatever it is) and i can get them back later. But that google sync should not screw up my mobile's contacts (do something in phone types).

Edit: I just checked, google sync is meant to be for mobile devices :ashamed:

i use to do this for taking bakup in my n73 and i still use this method

try if it works in ur fone -

Solution for backing up & restoring Messages
By default in symbian S60 edition phones, when we store messages on memory card, it gets stored in system/mail folder.
The same thing happens on Symbian 3rd edition phones too, but only difference is that the mail folder is buried deep inside the private folder..
What you need to access it..

1) Connect your handset to pc in the “Data transfer†(Mass storage) mode
2) Go to the Private folder on your memory card
3) Open the folders in sequential manner
4) Look for 1000484b (PARENT) folder or like that under which you will find Mail (Child) or mail2 folder, you are looking for.
5) Copy that (PARENT) folder to your PC
6) After you format you memory card using handset, copy back the same folder PARENT from pc again under Private folder on memory card using mass storage mode.
7) Voilla!!! You have got all your messages as it is.

-- OR --

Follow 1st step as it is, then go to search option on your pc, include system, hidden files and folders in search options and search for “mail†folder.. and follow steps 5 to 7 as it is.

Note:Message cant be transfered to phone memory...
The system files of phone memory cant be accessed due to new security levels in the 3rd edition phones...

Also when you try to connect your phone in Mass Storage mode make sure that the message memory is set to Phone Memory, else you would get the error
"Unable to activate mass storage mode. Memory card is in use by Messaging application. Change the selected memory in Messaging settings first"
and for taking backup of contacts -

go to contacts > mark all > copy to mmc

then there will be a contacts folder in E:/Others/Contacts

just copy paste this folder in ur pc

and then whenever u want these contacts back just copy paste the contacts folder to E:/others from your pc

simple as that :)

Yeah bro, you can very well sync your contacts over EDGE. I'll give you the settings you have to do in your 5230 :
1. Settings>Connectivity>Data Transfer.
2.Sync>Options>New Sync Profile>Start
3.Now give any profile name, I gave 'Google Sync' >Next
4.Server version 1.2
5.Now uncheck everything except 'Contacts'
6.Contacts DB> 'contacts' (without quotes)
7.Internet
8.Host address > https://m.google.com/syncml
9.Server ID > Google
10.Now give username and Password and you are good to go.

Now whenever you want to Sync your contacts, just go in contacts>Syncronise>Select the profile you just made.
The advantage is that it uses very less data to sync and no additional app is needed for this. And you can always edit your contacts in your gmail contacts also and sync in your 5230 to update the changes.
