A friend wants to buy an ipod touch. He however had a tough time with his iphone and was always bugging me for softwares, games and video converters :P I don't have the time now to provide tech support, so I would prefer if he buys some other pmp which supports drag and drop.

His budget is around $200 (buying from U.S.), and he'll also use it for browsing , so wi-fi is a must. Anything good from creative/ archos/etc? How about the nokia n810?

Even Creative X-fi has Wifi, but I doubt it is for browsing. Get him a PSP otherwise :) Browsing + Video + Music + games

can't the "tough time" learnings be carried over to the iTouch now?

Now that he's withered the initial teething troubles with the interface and the actually superb architecture of the "Apples that need to be touched", I see no reason to climb the learning ladder once again.

Just my two paisa.

How about Zune?

Huh, how about this, Zune bl0ws!

Seriously, there is nothing even remotely close to the iPod Touch especially if you need Wifi and a full fledged browsing experience and its very snappy at all of it.

And with the upcoming OS 3.0, Apple takes Mobile OS innovation a a whole new level, lots of never before seen features, and over 1000 new API's that promise even better games and softwares on the device.

Softwares and games are easily accessible on the App store that's built right into iPod and iTunes store, i don't know what makes it so hard, even the n00biest of the n00b can deal with this.

Regarding the video conversion well if he's a Windows guy then nothing works better than

1)Handbrake- for DVD's

2)Videora- for other Videos.

On a Mac iSquint/Visualhub or Quicktime Pro do the job.

And obviously with the added advantages after jailbreaking, its a no brainer.

Bottom-line, don't waste time finding any other device because if he does somehow end up buying something else, he's screwed.

Archos 605/705 Wifi 80 GB should be ~ 200$

You can see how it stacks up against the iphone(it would be the same for an ipod touch)

If you don't need more than say 20GB of space, get the 8GB touch or else go for the Zune 120GB or the iPod Classic.

@Maceinstein : iPod touch is good for browsing I agree, but for some people Sound quality is also a concern you see.

Not just good for browsing, its good at most things it has to offer.
SQ..huh..well, iPods do produce a fairly good soundstage being a portable device if you couple them with some capable earphones.

So unless you are a serious audiophile or just someone who has been brainwashed by some ignorant chap about Apple or its products, i don't see a reason not to get an iPod touch.

Anyways, OP never mentioned anything about SQ as a preference.

If he needs amazing Browsing device, go for iPod Touch.. I'm using it after using iPhone, It simply rocks...

Also AppStore has huge database of Softwares and games for it.. He wont be bore ever using iPod Touch..

One more thing, as Jailbreak for Touch 2G is out, you'll find it more interesting :D

Yeah, SQ is not a criteria. I'll check out videora and report back.

The ipod touch can be jailbreaked same as iphone??

Uhh, after that flick, is there really an alternative to the touch :(

The only thing the archos was good at was watching video. The responsiveness of the itouch just blew it away IMO.

Hmm, i wonder if thats all. Say the Archos was just as snappy and less laggy ?

Could a vendor just provide more power under the hood and pul it off.

I don't understand, if he already has an iPhone, why go for iTouch? I can understand if he needs more storage or something like that but he wants browsing n wifi, isn't that what iPhone is good at?

The Archos with its large 800*480 screen would also be better for web browsing , but in terms of response time / app support ipod touch blows it away

After using the iphone, using something else will be a step down in life.

Now had he not experienced it in the first place you would have been able to convince him of something else. He's gonna b**ch even more how you suggested an inferior product

heh, i guess you are e'screwed zhops :D

That's gone kaput :P He broke the screen.

so basically you want to saddle him with something else so you don't have to support him anymore.

Yaar, why dont you work out some mutually benefical deal, sounds like he can well afford it :D

Frankly there are no real alternatives to ipod touch ....unless he wants the device only to listen to music/watch movies. If that's the case check out zune, iriver Spinn, iriver clix(second gen),Cowon S9 or Cowon O2 .Would not suggest archos...it's too heavy and upgrades(movie playback codecs, etc) are very expensive. But remember, iphone/ipod touch is simply the best portable internet device and has tons of apps/games in the app store. So one would never get bored. The same's not the case with these other pmps.

If i were you i would ask him to get a touch , jailbreak it and use any video converter to convert movies and anapod/sharepod instead of itunes.
